Megastink Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 It seems like the MGX is build for finesse fishing, but what are its limits? It has only 12lbs of drag and I'm not sure about the brakes on it. How would this reel do for the following techniques: -Heavy Jigs -Spinnerbaits -Flip/punch I'm just wondering. Thanks! Quote
Hallman Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 I have a friend who has fished one for about a year and I just recently purchased one. I have had no issue with heavier tackle on it. I love fishing football jigs and spinner baits on it. It has much more power than it appears and feels like it should. Tackle Tour has a great review on it for more specifics. Quote
LuckyHandsINC. Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 Used mine all last season throwing 1/2 and 3/4 oz football jigs. Did great. I would not really classify it as a finesse reel although somewhat capable. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted May 14, 2013 Super User Posted May 14, 2013 the mgx is an awesome reel.baits from light to heavy are no problem.the braking system is the best i've used yet.the reel just doesn't want to backlash and casts are longer than even my patriarch.12 pounds of drag is more than enough. Grantman83 Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Even though the specs have it at 12lb the measured drag continually comes in between 5-9lbs. Even then, it should be more than enough for what you are doing Quote
jtesch Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 I have 2, use them for everything. I have had no problems what so ever with them. I know some people have had problems with the cast control breaking but I think if you check the screw on the side of the reel and make sure it stays tight you are all good. I have several other high dollar reels and the Mgx out casts them all. Straight into 20 mph wind I can cast as hard as I want with no worry's . Change out the bearings to BOCA orange seals and it gets even better. Enjoy Quote
Megastink Posted May 14, 2013 Author Posted May 14, 2013 5-9lbs of drag? That's it?!?! If you advertise 12lbs, I expect at least 10.5. Coupled with the low line capacity, I can't see spending the extra money... Quote
Grantman83 Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Check out the tackletour review...they got 5lbs of drag on it Quote
