chromedog Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 I can fish with a stick and a string. I have had the cheap $20 combos and stuff. But if I choose to buy the nice gear, then I choose to. I don't have the top of the line, or the best. But I have good gear. It makes me more confident, and I worked for it. As long as my kids or wife don't go without, it is my decision and my life. I won't feel bad or feel superior. I will just be me, fishing with what I want to fish with. Remember the saying "to each his own"? 3 Quote
BradGuenette Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 It's just like anything in life... Some people drive a Ferrari, some a rusty old Honda. Some people eat filet mignon others eat hot dogs. 2 Quote
prjavelin Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 In the last tournament I fished I beat a lot of guys using trackers that are worth over 8k$ with a $1500 12 foot tin boat, ugly sticks and cheap shimano combos. The only fancy combo I have(its not that much either) its a baitcasting abu veritas with a $60 daiwa reel. I spend my money on LINE and LURE/BAITS. The expensive stuff goes underwater. Quote
CountBassula Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 I've seen it in competitive shooting and I see it in fishing. Experience is far more valuable than having the latest, greatest gear. you mean like those d-bags with tricked out 2011's, drilled slides and frames, 0.0001lbs triggers and holo sights where the rear sight should be, who can't hit a barn from 10 yards away? yeaaaaaaa, i loved it when i clocked in 1st with my stock xdm-9 :-D 1 Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted May 14, 2013 Super User Posted May 14, 2013 Just do what you do best and do it to the best of your abilities, be with the ones you love and love the ones your with, all great quotes and certainly words we can choose to live by. We need to be more aware of our own surroundings, be thankful for what you have and soak up every minute of it, don't let your focus be on material things that others may or may not have, you have your own creations to be much more involved with and they should be your point of focus, your success and failures are not measured by them, rather they are shared by them, what you teach is what they will learn. Enjoy what has been given to you and work for what you enjoy to share with them. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted May 14, 2013 Super User Posted May 14, 2013 Yuup ...momoney no brains. A lot of these kind round here Quote
FrogFreak Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I had a conversation like this with some friends who I play music with recently. They thought I was nuts to spend $400 on a rod/reel combo. They said they can catch fish with an old crappy rod/reel. I said sure and we can play music with old crappy equipment but isn't it more fun when you don't have to worry about your equipment failing or when your equipment actually enhances your performance. Well, that got them thinking. I mean these guys have Harleys and they spend a ton of money on accessories. The thing is, if you work hard your time for enjoyment is so precious, I say get what you can afford and enjoy the crap out of yourself. 3 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 18, 2013 Super User Posted July 18, 2013 I spend my nights worrying about where the fish are, not what the other guy is using. 3 Quote
The Young Gun Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 How does the fish know if I'm using a loomis or ugly stick... I think it's more about timing, place, and presentation than rod and reel. I get outfished by Walmart stuff a lot. I'm no master angler though... Quote
Super User whitwolf Posted July 19, 2013 Super User Posted July 19, 2013 I never really cared what others have, especially when it involves fishing. I have few rules when I fish but the one I tend to live by Is simply have fun. I suppose there are folks out on the lake that look down their noses at others equipment but as Glen said there are many great people with various stages of equipment that are great to talk to at the ramp after a day of fishing and those are the folks I will be associated with. In the end If you're having fun, catching a few fish, and generally enjoying your time on the water then you are far more blessed than you know. 2 Quote
aquaholic Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 If that kind of stuff bothers you so much, i suggest staying far away from golf. 1 Quote
Gangley Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Posted Today, 11:13 AM Thanks again these carbonlite rods are very light I love it but you guys know ,when you buy something get home and after the fishing trip we always see that guy..... You know ...he has everything he's got the 2014 shimano president with Abu Garcia brakes, gold boca bearings, and to top that off Loomis closed the factory down just to make a rod just for him with KVD's help of coarse, then he tells you about the new Fluor- braid line he has on it,now I'm looking at my set-up ..really ..I'm home telling my wife I need another million dollars of fishing equipment and she's looking at me like she made the wrong choice ( marriage) wise the poor kids are like mommy don't let me grow up to be like him,is there a chance the cable guy can be my daddy..PLEASE!! Yea! I hate that GUY... GO TEXANS!!!!!!!!!!!' I LOVE THAT GUY!!! That guy always makes my day, especially when he gets his arse handed to him by somebody that looks like he just stepped off the set of the Beverly Hillbillies and jumped into a worn out boat with "inferior" equipment. Now I like nice equipment, have my expensive toys and will spend what some consider "good money" on what I like, but what I purchase and how much I spend is not discussed with others and I will NEVER make others feel insecure about the gear that they use or can afford. Anybody worth a grain of salt and eating high on the hog has at one point known what it was like to crap in low cotton without two pennies to rub together. The insecure db's showing off their gear are the ones who never had it rough or have forgotten. Those guys dont bother me, they are easy pickens usually. What really gets me nervous at the tournament launch is the older guy running a mid 90's boat with worn out front-deck carpeting and an antiquated, but well used sounder. Thats the guy that impresses me, thats the guy I want to talk to, thats the guy I want to go fishing with. Quote
Amarley Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 You get diminishing returns from your gear at some point. The rods may be lighter, stronger, better, but I keep telling myself that Brent Chapman won AOY last year with Wright and McGill gear (Skeet Reese and Rick Clunn rods $79-$99/rod) against all of the highest cost gear going (Ish's 40 Daiwa Steez combos, etc). However, sometimes you "gotta look good to play good", so the expensive tackle is paying for confidence as much as it is paying for quality gear. If fishing means a lot to you and you want to buy a Champion rod or MGX reel, or ask for that high dollar G Loomis rod from your wife for Christmas, I say go for it. No hating here. I own gear across the spectrum and my money rods are in the $100 range (mojo, irod I got on sale) vs the $250 g loomis's I have. Quote
sizzlefry Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 I have a 500-600$ rig and a 45$ rig guess which one has caught more fish 45$ rig wins. once on a guided trip I had my expensive rig and the guide was impressed and wanted to use all day I let him for a few minutes but guess who caught the most fish and the biggest fish that day ( that I paid for) my girlfriend at the time who never fished before and the guide let her use his old zebco thumb caster Quote
jhoffman Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 I bet I have ten grand in my boat, but you wouldnt know it to look. I want a better boat but its not to look cool. Its being last regardless of what number you draw at the start gets old. You get to the top of the lake and someone has three in the box already. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Yeah I should feel bad for owning nice gear. I'll think about that while I work 14 hour days. What a stupid post. AMEN Quote
georgeyew Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I try not to talk about equipment with other people if at all possible. I just stick to talking about the baits. But coming on this forum doesn't count Quote
