Super User slonezp Posted May 12, 2013 Super User Posted May 12, 2013 Caught my first jika rig fish(plural) yesterday. Had a 100% hookup ratio. Every fish was hooked good in the roof of their mouth and weren't getting off. My question is about hook/bait size. I have a 6/0 gammy ewg which was the smallest I could find that had a big enough eyelet for the split ring to fit thru. Bait of choice was a Havoc Pit Boss which has been working very well on my home lake for a couple years now. The Pit boss is a hair too small for a 6/0 which makes rigging and keeping it in place difficult. Does anyone know who may make a 4/0 with a big enough eyelet for a split ring? Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted May 12, 2013 Super User Posted May 12, 2013 I've been matching the split ring to the size of the hook needed to fit the bait. Admittedly as the hooks go down in size, the split rings get pretty small but I am using the rig with lighter line and mostly as a type of finesse presentation on spinnging gear. It's worked out so far. A-Jay Quote
Quillback Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Yep you need smaller split rings - I've used Owner #2 hyper split rings and have put 1/0 Gammy EWG's on them. Quote
Quillback Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Another method I've seen, it to use a duo-lock snap instead of a split ring. 1 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted May 12, 2013 Super User Posted May 12, 2013 I'm not sure what size split rings I use but they fit through 4/0 gammy ewgs when I made my own Jika Rig's. It is very possible. I agree the hook up on these rigs seems to be great. Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted May 13, 2013 Super User Posted May 13, 2013 I agree, and I think Owner has what you need! A little trick I do on my Jika rig is on the first split ring I put a Norman's speed clip so now I can change weights fast! Quote

Super User slonezp Posted May 13, 2013 Author Super User Posted May 13, 2013 Thanks. Not sure of the size of rings I have. I'll look for smaller rings. I'll check out the snaps as well. Quote
