Coopdog72 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Hello everyone I went to bass pro to buy my first baitcaster. I only wanted to spend about $150.00 for a combo for some reason I believe you should at least buy middle ground stuff when starting out. The young man must have seen me coming before I know it I have a medium heavy 7 ft. Carbonlite rod and a shimano chronarch E6 he put 12 pound mono on it while I learn to cast. Today I'm casting pretty good no backlashes so my question is what type of bass fishing would I use this setup for I tried drop shotting but the rod seems to stiff and should I keep mono on this. Long story short It cost me 300 dollars for the set up I love it I just need help how would you use this combo thank you very much Quote
MrSwimJig Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Should be a pretty good all around combo. Jigs, spinner baits, T-Rigs etc... I would keep the mono on there for now while you get use to using it. Enjoy the new combo... Quote
Super User Darren. Posted May 12, 2013 Super User Posted May 12, 2013 Yup, he saw you coming Still. Chronarch is nothing to be snide about. A great reel to be sure. Quote
JunkYard814 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 The guy set you up right for bass fishing if this is your only rod. You can pretty much do everything from spinnerbaits to crankbaits to soft plastics with that combo. Extremely light weight lures and finesse fishing tactics may be difficult on this set-up though. In the future if you are going to go with multiple combo's, that Chronarch can be used for a wide variety of presentations (I'm assuming he gave you the 6.3 to 1 gearing). Again that rod can be used for a lot of different presentations as well. Side note: One of the reasons I don't like shopping at BPS is that I feel a lot of the time their employees push their own products a little too much. By the time I walk into the store, I generally have what I want to buy down to two or three specific options, and every time I'm in there, they try to divert me to a Bass Pro Shops product. 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted May 12, 2013 Super User Posted May 12, 2013 Oh, BTW, welcome to the forums. Stop by the introduction forum and say hi, if ya get a sec. Quote
EvanT123 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 It happens. You certainly could have made worse choices. That is a great all around combo. That reel is like a Honda or Toyota it retains a resale value so look at it like 300 spent but at the same time money in the bank. 1 Quote
Fishwhittler Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Junkyard814 nailed it. Your new setup is a jack-of-all-trades rig that will be excellent to build around later on. The quality is also good enough that if you take care of them, there will be no reason to replace either the rod or the reel with more expensive equipment in the future. I think you'll meet one or two people on this forum who like the Chronarch E… 2 Quote
dam0007 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Chronarch is more like a BMW in the shimano line. A citica is like a Honda lol. I own the E5, 6 and 7. I love them. The mono will be good for spinnerbaits. Congrats on purchase. 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted May 12, 2013 Super User Posted May 12, 2013 Dude, you got a darn good reel and and decent rod. A 7' MH is pretty much your do iit all rod. T rigs, jigs, spinners, flukes, hollow bodies, weoghtless t rigs, carolona rigs...its almost unanimously the most universal set up that you can buy. But yes you are correct, maybe a little to stiff for drop shots and a little too light for punching but everything in between is fair game. 300, bucks is about what i have in a rod/ reel combo too. Its a strong price range and hard to go wrong. You did good ttoday, keep the mono for a while and enjoy the new stuff. 1 Quote

The 6 is only a tad slower, but it can be used for anything that a 7 can. With that rod, It will be great for jigs, plastics, heavy top water baits, spinner baits etc. Only thing I wouldn't use it for is soft and hard jerkbaits and crank baits. I prefer a moderate action for those. You kinda got the Dodge Ram of the rods. It'll do just about anything! 1 Quote

Super User Sam Posted May 12, 2013 Super User Posted May 12, 2013 Take your rod and reel and look at the rod for its paramaters. You are looking at the bait weight and line test limitations. Stay within these limitations and the rod will perform as expected. Next time you want to purcahse a rod or reel do your research and visit various on-line tackle shops and read their reviews and then CONTACT US FOR OUR INPUT. We don't have a dawg in the fight and can give you our honest input while being honest, fair and objective. You have a nice setup for various techiques. Read about other presentations and then make future purchases to meet those objectives. 1 Quote
Capt.Bob Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I agree, as you have been told, if you only had one settup, the one you have is going to do a great job for most applications for all bass species and most freshwater fishing period. The smaller finesse lures and techniques should have a little lighter action more forgiving rod, which I would get next, like a 6'10" MXF or MLXF with the same reel or similar. then for trout and pan fish of course require much lighter and preferably spinning equipment. But as others have said for bass fishing, and I think for 70% of all freshwater fishing, you have a darn good setup!! We all have our preference for brands, but you have pretty good gear for that first serious bass outfit!!! 1 Quote
Coopdog72 Posted May 12, 2013 Author Posted May 12, 2013 Thanks again these carbonlite rods are very light I love it but you guys know ,when you buy something get home and after the fishing trip we always see that guy..... You know ...he has everything he's got the 2014 shimano president with Abu Garcia brakes, gold boca bearings, and to top that off Loomis closed the factory down just to make a rod just for him with KVD's help of coarse, then he tells you about the new Fluor- braid line he has on it,now I'm looking at my set-up ..really ..I'm home telling my wife I need another million dollars of fishing equipment and she's looking at me like she made the wrong choice ( marriage) wise the poor kids are like mommy don't let me grow up to be like him,is there a chance the cable guy can be my daddy..PLEASE!! Yea! I hate that GUY... GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!' 1 Quote
