I have not used trokar hooks, but I have heard a number of mixed opinions including some people saying that they have lost more fish because the cutting point tears a hole in the fish's mouth v.s. punching a hole like a gamakatsu or owner hook. Has anyone experienced this?

If you tell me Gammys and Owners punch a hole and Trokars tear a hole then I'm going to tell you that you bought knock off hooks because every hook with a cutting point will open a hole if you get the hook in the soft part of the mouth. I used Mustad spinnerbait hooks because the Gamakatsu and Owners did exactly that, and that is tear a hole and so based on that I won't use the Trokar spinnerbait hooks and it is also a reason I don't use cutting point hooks, regardless of brand on shaky heads or and finesse plastics or jigs, only on heavy jigs or thick plastics. Mustad and VMC and the new Eagle Claw hooks are what you want as they have needle points designed to penetrate, not cut, VMC calls theirs, "cone cut" , Mustad is the "Ultra point" and the new Eagle Claw is the "Needle point" , any hook described like that is what you want to use for finesse tactics as a cutting point is overkill on fine wire hooks.

CPBassfishing,

Yes I have experienced the Trokar point cutting a large hole also. I also have noticed they cut the crap out of soft plastics, greatly reducing the life of the bait. I gave them a real good chance, then gave all mine away to a competitor of mine at a tournament. Some folks really like them. Some folks don't.

Great hook but very expensive. If you are the competitive tournament angler I would suggest buying these hooks. But if you are on a budget, lazersharp, owner, and gamakatsu work great.

I love the ones I've tried, but have a hard time with the price, especially when I know I can stock up at Wal-Mart on clearance Gammys at the end of the season....

The only one I buy with regularity is the flipping 5/0 and 6/0 sized hooks, I love these. I grabbed some VMC flipping hooks the other day to see how they measure up. The VMCs look identical, and are $3 less than the $7 Trokars. I haven't used them yet, but if they are comparable it would be a no brainer to buy the much cheaper brand...

I like some Trokar hooks, but hate others. The Finesse worm and HD worm 4/0 down are what I primarily use. The flipping hook above 3/0 I won't use, same goes for any of the swimbait or mag swimbait. The reason I won't use them is that they punch too large a hole.

Agreed.

I personally love the light wire finesse worm hook, great hook up percentage and can handle big fish if you don't horse them. I tried the flippin hooks in 4/0 and lost a lot of fish on them.

I bought a lot when they were Buy One Get One Free and love them.  I do not miss or lose fish on Trokar.  Love them.
