I purchased a used boat from a customer of mine through my job.

Two days later,  he brought the trolling motor to me and gave it to me free.

The control box covers were all smashed and cracked and it looked like h#ll.

I bought a new cover kit and it looks almost like new and works just fine.

It was so beat up when I got it,  I can't tell whether the light gets mounted somewhere in the cover or just lays in the cover.

Does anyone know?

do you mean the light that lights up the directional indicator?

Not to sound like an idiot here, but mine is very dull at best and even at night I go off of feel, not the light. If I were you I wouldnt even put it in. I know if mine broke or burned out I would not replace it.

That being said, I am not sure where it goes. Never took my head unit apart

Saw mine inaction for the first time at night on Tuesday on my maxxum, and yes its very dim, just enough for you to see which way the arrow is pointing, better than nothing.

Well this won't be much of a contribution to your question but I have the cheapest minn kota with 30 lbs thrust for my john boat. LOLZ

Ok I just pulled off my top cover and snapped a pic for you. Here it is. The light is held underneath that whitish clear clip.

Thanks Koofy,  that helps.  Mine is either missing the strap or being used for something else.  On mine,  there is another strap on the other side where the wires are held.  Maybe I need to reconfigure the strap.

It's mostly a matter of,  "it's there and came new as part of the kit so,  I want it to work".
