stkbassn Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 We had a slow night last night but it was worth it. We decided to go big or go home and threw some big baits on our home lake here VA....I attached the two pics of the pigs we caught...If only the shad had actually been up last night we might have had a truly amazing night but this was pretty great. Both fish caught on 9" baits.....just another nod to big bait theory I guess. It ain't always about the finesse! Mine was 6.15 and 21 inches, the fish on the golden rule. Jeffs was 6.12, and nearly 24 inches, the one he's holding up in the pic... 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 10, 2013 Super User Posted May 10, 2013 The shad will not be up at night, they need sunlight to activate plankton they feed on. Going big can help the bass to locate and strike your lure, and they did! Congratulations. Tom 2 Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Very nice. Would not have thought to night fish this time of year. Bass here in VA have not even spawned yet. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 10, 2013 Super User Posted May 10, 2013 Nice looking bass, good catching! Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 10, 2013 Super User Posted May 10, 2013 Yep, as Tom said, shad are more active in the daytime than at night. Big baits will catch big bass and the smaller fish may also try to eat the presentation. Congrats on those two hogs. Anytime anyone catches bass that size is outstanding. Now go back and catch them again! Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted May 10, 2013 Super User Posted May 10, 2013 Those are HAWG certified Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 10, 2013 Super User Posted May 10, 2013 That's good work. Can I ask what bait? Quote
Big-O Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 WTG, Those are NICE ones for sure and IMO, Bigger Baits are often Better at night because the fish can locate them more easily. Quote
stkbassn Posted May 11, 2013 Author Posted May 11, 2013 Thanks for all of the kind words guys! Yeah, it's always fun to stick largemouth like this and especially when they blow up on a big wakebait...both of these fish absolutely smoked our baits....good times indeed! We had a good trip yesterday catching some smallmouth in a very special lake in southwest va.....We caught 18 and though none were huge, we had 5 over 3 pounds...the biggest right at 4 and 20 inches...the rest were 15-19 inches....all on 6 to 7" swimbaits....always a blast. Not sure if the big females are getting ready to spawn or where they were yesterday...fun either way! A few pics from yesterday added...the rest were fairly average and smaller than what we're used to at this lake but we had fun... Quote
