Arv Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I posted a while back on here about a Quantum Catalyst that I bought a little less than a year ago. My issue with this reel is that it is brand new and I can only get maybe 20-30 yards of casting distance (unless I free spool it in which case I tend to backlash pretty quick). The consensus then was to ship the reel back under warranty and get a new one. Soon after I moved and misplaced/forgot about the reel and just recently found it. I also recently read several places about reels coming over lubed and that affecting the casting performance. Could this be the issue? I would rather not deal with trying to exchange it, if possible, and also wouldn't mind learning some more about reel upkeep. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance. Quote

I would suggest that you contact Mike @ DVT Delaware Valley Tackle. Get it deep serviced and brought back up to specs (discount for members), then go out and brake that puppy in.. Tight Lines! Quote
Chris Wilson Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 You could service it yourself. I've serviced many baitcasters and never had to use a reel schematic. You just need to be methodical in how you approach the reel, and organized. You could buy yourself some mineral spirits (Which i prefer to use) and put all your bearings in that for 5-10 minutes, shake them around every once in a while. That should flush out the old lube. Then use compressed air (or when i'm not near an air source, i'll wrap a paper towel around the bearing and blow through it), and blow out the mineral spirits. One drop of a quality reel oil and you're set. While you're in there, if you feel ambitious, take off all the old grease on the gears and lube up with fresh grease. Then it's set for a season or two, depending on how much you fish! Quote
MrSwimJig Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 If you want to do it yourself I would contact Mike at DVT and ask him about the reel. Mike gave me a lot of GREAT ADVICE on servicing my reels and they are absolutely BUTTER SMOOTH now. Quote
JunkYard814 Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 If that is the orange Catalyst PT casting reel, I hope you get it working properly. I bought one a couple years ago and it's one of my favorite reels to use. Quote

I bought one a couple years ago and it's one of my favorite reels to use. Junkyard, its the silver/grey and blue one. I really like how it feels and its super light so I'm bummed it won't cast worth anything. Hopefully that will change here soon. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 10, 2013 Super User Posted May 10, 2013 I know this is a stupid question, but have you checked the brakes? Quote
Arv Posted May 10, 2013 Author Posted May 10, 2013 I know this is a stupid question, but have you checked the brakes? Haha, not a stupid question. You never know who you're talking to on the internet. But yes. I've messed around with the brakes, cast control, drag, different line, different rods and different weight lures. Unless theres something I'm missing with the brakes, because it is an extrenally adjustable micro ACS deal that I'm not used to, but I've turned all those settings too and same result unless I turn them all the way off. Boogey Man Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Have you tried cleaning the brake race? If not wipe it off with alchohol then put a drop or oil on a q tip and apply it to the brake race. Quote
RoachDad Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 is your line wrapped around the rod tip? Just kidding. How comforrable are you with baitcasters? Are you able to cast others but this one gives you trouble? Just trying to see if it is operator error. Quote
dave Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Not to start up an old (and recent long thread but) 30 yards is pretty decent cast. Quote

Arv........Have a PRO do the first service so you'll know how the reel WILL truly fish/feel. Then learn to maintain the reel during the season..... Tight Lines! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 10, 2013 Super User Posted May 10, 2013 Every reel I have had serviced, including top end Core, have showed a noticable improvement in performance. With the exception of my Stella reels, I had everything serviced new out of the box. This is money well spent in my opinion. Quote
Arv Posted May 10, 2013 Author Posted May 10, 2013 I'm leaning pretty hard towards getting DVT to check it out. My bday is coming up soon so that might wind up being a present to myself or from my girlfriend. Thanks for all advice from everyone! Quote

Arv Posted May 10, 2013 Author Posted May 10, 2013 Not to start up an old (and recent long thread but) 30 yards is pretty decent cast. I agree, 30 yards isnt bad. But when I can sling the rest of my reels much farther than that I feel like there is much to be desired from this reel. Quote

Haha, line not wrapped around the tip, although I have missed guides and wondered what was going on. To answer your question, I am very comfortable with baitcasters. I have 5 others and have no issues with them. Quote
