toddwchandler Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I am fortunate enough to live in a neighborhood that backs right up to a 50 acre pond. It is right behind my house and I'm able to walk down to it and fish frequently. I have seen a decent sized beaver swimming around down there the last three times that I have gone fishing. He seems to like to hang around in the same general area, so I'm assuming that's where his den (or whatever you call a beaver's home) is. Will this beaver eat up or scare away the fish in that general area? Should I just avoid fishing that area or does it really not matter? TC Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted May 9, 2013 Super User Posted May 9, 2013 I mean i wouldn't be messing with the beaver but its should mess up your bass fishing. I have a big pond too theres a big beaver with big bass and tons of.them.. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 9, 2013 Super User Posted May 9, 2013 Enjoy the added attraction, the beaver has no impact on fish other than creating additional cover in the pond. 1 Quote

If it's a natural pond, then the beaver probably built it. Beavers don't eat fish, just trees. They are very important to the ecosystem, as the ponds they build create key habitat for other animals. I also wouldn't mess with the beaver. They are very protective of their young and their lodge, and not particularly afraid of people in my experience. There is a beaver at a pond I frequent that is probably over 90lbs. I wouldn't mess with him, but he lets me fish in peace. Quote
toddwchandler Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 I wasn't suggesting that I was going to bother or harm the beaver. It's fun to watch him swimming around and he can catch you off guard and scare the poop out of you when he slaps that tail on the water. I was just trying to find out if his presence would spook the fish or anything. Sounds like I can continue to fish around the area he hangs out with no negative impact. TC Quote

TC Didn't think you were going to... just warning that the beaver will probably step up if you challenge it They have killed people before, seriously. I'm sure if you don't bother it the beaver will let you fish in peace. I tend to think of myself as a visitor in the beavers house when I'm out fishing, and treat it with respect as I would want a visitor in my house to. The tail slap is a warning to other nearby beavers that they should take cover for whatever reason, as far as we humans understand. Quote
