BuckMaxx Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I recently changed to 10 lb braid on my spinning rods with a 8 lb flauracarbon leader. Twice yesterday when I set the hook and snapped them off. What am I doing wrong?Only thing I can think of is after years of setting on mono. I just don't need to pop em like I am used too? Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted May 8, 2013 Super User Posted May 8, 2013 There will be reduced stretch in the line, no need to set the hook hard. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 8, 2013 Super User Posted May 8, 2013 Does the line snap at the knot or below the knot? Do you check the flourocarbon for knicks, scrapes, cuts, nicks and abraisions? As stated above, flouro does not have the stretch of mono and you may be setting the hook too hard. However, if the line is in good condition and the knot does not fail you should not be loseing them on the hookset or during the fight. However, the flouro should not fail no matter how hard you set the hook so please run the line between your first finger and thumbnail every so often and cut out and replace any damaged line. Also, does the line break off when you set the hook or during the fight? I know you keep the rod tip up in the air unless you put the tip in the water to stop the bass from jumping but do you ever point the rod tip directly at the bass causing the line to be in a straight line between the rod's tip and the bass? This will cause both mono and flouro to break off. Wierd situation and I would like to read more comments and input on the subject. I have lost many a bass when the line snapped at the boat or the knot failed due to my negligence in not taking the time to check the line or retie the knot. Quote
BuckMaxx Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 Both times were at the hook set. I think I will try another knot which one would you recommend? Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted May 8, 2013 Super User Posted May 8, 2013 The alberto knot is great, and after you tie it a couple times is not difficult at all. Smaller than a uni to uni so it goes thru guides well, and is strong. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted May 8, 2013 Super User Posted May 8, 2013 Flouro has a crystalline structure any kink should be treated as a cut line. You cannot rush knot tying, the mighty Palomar when sinched will kink the line and subsequently will break off during hook set. I cannot pull on the standing (working) part of flouro line without flattening it, although the line is together it is broken under the surface, and breaks during hook set. Try sinching the knot by pulling on the tag side only, worked for me. Oh, and never tie any knot in flouro without lubricating, guaranteed break. Shaw Grigsby uses a modified Palomar, you can find it on YouTube Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 8, 2013 Super User Posted May 8, 2013 You're drag is set too high. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 8, 2013 Super User Posted May 8, 2013 Knots require much more care tying than some other lines. Not all fluorocarbons are created equal. If you haven't read this article already, then take a look at it and see if your line is one of those tested, and if so, how well it performed. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewfluorocarbontestpg6.html EDIT: As Mr. Franco said, your drag might be too high...especially if you are using an extra fast action rod. mjseverson24 Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 where does the line break? at the knot, the leader, the main line? I use the double uni knot for joining braid to floro, definately one of the stongest and easiest knots to use. with light spinning gear and minimal stretch with floro/braid combo try to do more of a reel set, instead of a sweeping rod set. this will load the rod up before you actually set the hook into the fish and will more evenly distribute the strain of the hook set. Super User .RM. Posted May 8, 2013 Super User Posted May 8, 2013 You're drag is set too high. x3 Low stretch lines, fast tip rods, hastly tied knots, all creat problems if the drags are set to tight..... Tight Lines! Quote
BuckMaxx Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 I will look into it further. Thanks for the input! I was skipping a concrete structure in murky water. I got irratated with it and started fishing just the 2-10SW braid. I did fine after that and will fish it that water for the tourney on Saturday. Quote
