victory23 Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 I wondered if anybody else has had problems with them, once I had the manager tell me that a 7.1:1 baitcaster meant that it had 7 ball bearings and for 1 turn of the handle the spool would spin once. Also bought a trolling motor there and it took them 30 min to get it out of storage and to the counter where i was waiting. And also bought a reel and was dissapointed in it and brought it back hours later and they would not give me a full refund. Long story short will never buy anything there again. Quote
NEBassMan Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 uneducated people just really tick me off sometimes..... Quote

volpster31 Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 i guess it depends on the people working their & if their fisherman or not...beleive it or not, mike iacconelli worked at the dicks that i shop at..he worked their for a long time too & was allowed to make the orders for the department...it was great because he always knew what was IN or the new lures out...................... Other. Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 My dick is great. The people that work behind the counters know what there talking about when i ask em were somthing is or how a certain reel is. I just think your dicks just have stupid employes Quote
HomersTomaco Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 they are far from a good fishing store, they never know what they are doing and usually have no one even working the department Quote
powerman970 Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 I have tried 2 different locations here in Birmingham and am convinced that I have no use for Dick's. Employees are rude and not very well trained and they have absolutely no selection whatsoever. Big store with 2 aisles of fishing stuff. Give me a break, Wal Mart has more. I do my shopping at Academy and online with BPS. They are building a BPS in my town scheduled to open next year so I guess that settles where I will shop. I wouldn't pee on Dick's Sporting Goods if they were on fire, and I told 'em that last time I was in there. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted February 26, 2007 Super User Posted February 26, 2007 Dick's sporting goods where I live in Indiana is just OK. Â You can luck out sometimes and find someone good to help you but I have seen, on occasion, that there is only one person to cover hunting, fishing and sometimes camping. Â I think they call it the "Lodge Department". Â This is too much for one person to handle. Â A few years ago, Dick's bought out Galyans here in Indiana. Â This was a major problem for most outdoor enthusiast. Â Galyans would carry everything, high to low end. Â They had great sales, a fantastic staff of pros that actually had some knowledge, and a small town attitude towards their customers. Â Dick's sort of destroyed that by under staffing and under training. Â This is not to say that Dick's does not have a dedicated staff, it is just that what the company has brought to this type of retail has left the customer hanging out to dry, wanting that small town bait shop in a big over stocked store. Â This is what causes me to drive an hour or two to either Bass Pro Shop or Gander Mountain. Dicks has become, to me, a place where the "style" of a sport is sold and not the sport itself. Quote

Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted February 26, 2007 Super User Posted February 26, 2007 What i hate about anystore really is one where the person workin the fishing or hunting dep TRYS to tell you there is no such thing as what u ask for and then proceed to try and sell you something they think is the best thing since sliced bread. All jokes aside you can tell when a person is bein helpful with knowledge as appossed to bein a TOTAL arsehole who thinks he knows it all! man i really hate know it alls > Quote
jdw174 Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 About 13 years ago, I worked as the "backwall manager" (fishing/camping), at the first Dick's store located outside of NY state (this one in Erie, PA). Â When I worked there, EVERYONE they hired was versed in what they were selling. Â For instance, I had fishing dept. personnel who fished for different species. Â I handled bass, two of the others fished for walleye, had one guy whose favorite was steelhead/salmon. Â All of them could at least converse on species other than their favorites. Â It was that way in all departments. Â The fishing dept I ran was HUGE! Â It was store policy that no customer went more than 30 seconds without at least a greeting. Â At that time, the Lodge was strictly hunting. Sad to say, that has gone by the wayside. Â I've visited back there and nobody seems to know anything. Â Their fishing dept. has shrunk to nothing and is housed in a small room (lodge) with the hunting dept. Â Now, the emphasis is on golf, clothing, et al. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Replaced my endura 55 in minutes, no questions. Â Was 3 weeks old and the speed selector switch had no 4th or 5 th setting. Â Only clicked 3 times in forward. Quote
Bream Master Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Â Â Â Â Â Â I'm wondering who named the store? Seems to explain alot. Hahahahahah. Â I don't care too much for Dick's either. Â At the store here in my town, one guy works both the fishing and hunting department. Â I've never, never seen more than one guy in the fishing/hunting department. Â Takes forever to find him to get a reel out for me. Â Quote
VaBass80 Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 I only go to Dick's to pick up bags of plastics all other buys I head to Basspro shops. Â Even tho its a good 35-40min drive its really worth it, and can usually find some good deals. Â Most of the people i've encountered at basspro are knowledgable, and have some good information on local rivers and lakes and can get some real nice tips. Quote
victory23 Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 wow I did not know that this many people were dissatifyed with Dicks. Thank goodness for Gander Mountain and on March 17 CABELAS ;D , cannot wait Quote
BassFishingMachine Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 The Dicks I shop at is pretty much similiar. The employees who work the fishing department know very little and they avoid helping you(there is about 2 people who work the fishing department/hunting). If you ask them a question they will simply respond with either "Ive never heard of that" or "Uh...if its not there we probably don't have it"(and the *Uh* is not an exaggeration, they literally say it). They rarely will walk into the aisle with you and try to figure out where the item would be, nor do I think they even know anything about the fishing lures or softbaits. In my opinion they should hire only experienced or semi-experienced fishermen for the fishing department. I only shop there for known plastics (which they only have a small variety, thank god they have some senkos) , and rapalas etc. The only reason I shop there is because they are fairly close. But there stock is hard to deal with... for instance. They had a whole wall of shakey worms like the shakey powerworm and others and no shakey jigheads.... So as anyone else would think I thought maybe they put the shakey jigheads somewhere else, even though it would be pretty stupid not to just have a supply of them hanging right next to the shakey worms they put out in the main aisle. So I asked one of their employees (this guy knew a very little, but more then the rest of em). And he tells me they do not have the shakey jigheads :-? How are you going to put out a wall of shakey worms and not sell the jigheads for them!! > That just baffles me... If only there was a cabelas or a bps in NJ then I'd be set 8-). Quote
TrickyVT1887 Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I work at Gander Mountain in fredericksburg Va in fishing and its appaling going to other stores, i'm only 20 years old but still know what i'm doing on the water but often times i get discriminated against because of my age. Especially at bass pro for instance i will be looking at the shimano curados and chronarchs and other high end reels and the sales people dont even seem to notice me, and when they do its almost as if they dont respect me, and At dicks i dont even wanna go there i look for clearance stuff and thats it got a few bags of senkos there last month for like $3.50 a bag but dont even try to ask them anything, i was looking for 3/0 gamakatsu EWG hooks and he takes me to the hook isle and started trying to show me #3 octopus hooks, Â I dont know about anyone else but i have issues with walmart too, i walked up to the counter and asked an associate for help and not trying to be critical or condiscending but there was someone with a learning disability working fishing, bless his heart he tried to help me find gary yamamoto baits but started looking through crank baits and spinnerbaits for them, the worse part was he was supposed to be selling firearms and ammunition, is it just me or is costomer service and educated employees a thing of the past. I hope that noone thinks that of me or my store but i try my best to help where i can. Quote
The_Natural Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 My dick is great. Glad to hear it's doing okay  ;D Quote
KYbass1276 Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I don't shop a dicks anymore. Â There is a boat/tackle store called Plapps Pro outdoors where I get all my baits and hooks etc. Â I buy my rod and reels a BPS which might stop soon as I will probally be making all my purchaces from the above mentioned. Â What I like about them is the guys working in the store really fish tournaments or really are hardcore weekend anglers. Â Quite a few pros from the elite seris stop in there. Â They sponser Bill Lowen and he will actually work in the tackle dept at times, I was told he would be there this weekend so I plan on stocking up on some supplys and advice. Â The only way I would go to dicks agin is if they where going out of business and everything was on clearance. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 28, 2007 Super User Posted February 28, 2007 We have three Dick's Sporting Goods stores in the geographical Richmond, Virginia area. The one in the Stony Point Fashion Mall is a disaster in the fishing department. Â No one knows anything about fishing. The one at Short Pump is a little better, but not by much. Â However, they do have a better selection than the Stony Point store. The one by Chesterfield Shopping Center is the best. They guy who runs the department actually is a bass fisherman and he is very helpful. Â He does not have the knowledge of a true tackle shop but he is helpful and pleasant. Â And the selection is OK. Â Not up to par with Green Tops, Castaways, Gander Mountain, BPS or Dance's; but OK if you are in a pinch and do not want to drive many miles to go to a good tackle shop. When I was growing up I was taught that 1) when you want jewelry, go to a jeweler. When you want to buy a house, go to a realtor. Â When you want to buy nice clothes, go to a small clothier. Â So, it you want to purchase good tackle and talk to people who know something about fishing, go to a tackle store. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 28, 2007 Super User Posted February 28, 2007 I have 2 Dick's near me, 1 in Buffalo, 1 in Rochester. The one in Buffalo is excellant, well stocked, large selection, helpfull staff. The one in Rochester is just OK, stock runs low and it seems to be a while before they restock, and the staff is way below average, they have one kid who loves bass fishing, but I rarely see him there, the other guys are all morons. Quote
eastkybass Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 If I am there and they have something I will grab it ours has an ok selection but I still perfer to go up to Gander Mountain or BPS ours doesn't have alot but they will carry a few things that I will grab, but not that good. Quote
The Duke Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 My dick is great. The people that work behind the counters know what there talking about when i ask em were somthing is or how a certain reel is. I just think your dicks just have stupid employes Like any department store, its risky asking these people for advice. Not because they're bad people, but that area may not be their expertise. Lets face it, everyone thinks they know fishing. When you need expert advice, I always suggest going to an expert place (such as a tackle shop). I use Dick's a lot, but I never ask for advice. I know what I'm looking for there. Quote
