Looking to put some line on my new baitcaster. I will using this set up to fish for smallies in open water. Should I go with the Elite, or Siege?

What will you be throwing? How heavy? The elite is more soft and easy managing where as the siege is tuff.

If I was to use mono and open water drop shot or finesse, I'd go Elite.

Sorry, I'll be throwing some lipless cranks, shallow cranks, maybe some jerkbaits and crawler harness. And doing some drop shot. Nothing heavier than 1/2-5/8 oz.

Cranks I'd prefer a tuff line. Especially shallow square bills and lipless since you are going to be dragging them threw the nasty bouncing off cover etc. More abrasion resistant. I like about 15-17 pound for these. The siege, in my opinion would be better suited for it.

Drop shot is more finesse and a softer line is what I prefer. The Elite would be better suited for drop shot. 15-17 pound might be a bit much for drop shot. It will work and catch fish. If you don't have another rig, it will work.

Thanks for the info! Does the Siege cast as good as the Elite?

On spinning gear the Elite was easier to manage. On casting I didn't notice a difference. You would think no as its more stiff etc, but I couldn't tell. I never got over 14 pounds though.

I us both lines as I am mostly a Sufix only guy. Both lines have the same diameter in every pound test. The Elite does handle a very slight touch better on spinning gear in the lower tests. On a casting reel I feel the Seige flowed a little smoother. Never used over 12lb. test. Personally, I would go Seige. It seems to have a little better abrasion resistance and knot strength IMO. Neither has an excessive amount of memory and handle very well.

Elite is softer and casts easier in my opinion. Seige is much tougher and is still a pretty good line. Elite is my go to mono, I use 12lb seige on my crank-caster, that's it.

I've got 6# Elite on my spinning rod. I initially got it because it was cheap, but I certainly will use it again since it is soft and strong.

Not sure if its been mentioned, well it sort of has, but the Siege has excellent abrasion resistance for mono. Sometimes you can get in some scratchy areas when cranking, maybe take that into consideration along with all the other suggestions already listed.

I use 17lb Siege as a Carolina Rig leader, that stuff is tough!  Coming through/over rocks with neary a wimper!

I have used elite. I will tell you it cast well, but it was sooooooooooooo stretchy.

Another question, do you guys use a fluorcarbon leader for cranks when using either Elite or Siege?

I wouldn't bothering. They're reaction baits so stealth is sort of a moot point. It's just another knot to fail.

Thanks everyone for your input! I went ahead and bought the Sufix Siege 12lb. in Tangerine. No one around here carried the Tangerine color so I had to order it!

I used Sufix Siege 12lb for all my squarebills, traps, and jerkbaits last year and really liked it. It stayed very limp on the spool and it held up like a champ around wood, rock, and weed cover.

I throw 12# siege on a baitcaster for square bills, jerk baits, lipless cranks and even some top water and haven't had any issues.  It's tough, but still casts well. I would recommend respooling after a nasty backlash or a lot of shallow cranking, but $10 for 330 yards I can change it out 3 times and not break the bank.

On my bass spinning gear I use braid with a leader, but I do have 6# elite on my trout reels and it handles very well. Doesn't seem to have as much memory as other monos I have used (I also condition my line, but I really have no idea if it makes any difference).

So, thumbs up to each, but if you're using casting gear or fishing around structure my vote goes to siege.

I use the same line on 2-3 reels.  I like it.  Line is easy for me to see which I also like.  :D

This thread is five years old, but Siege is still very good line.

I forgot to check the original post date.  Unfortunately with the spread of Cabin Fever at this time of year lots of old threads get brought back to the top.  This thread is still viable, but one with someone asking which reel (rod) to buy 5 years ago....not quite so much.  :D
