fishing frogs & toads

I'm wondering how most guys retrieve the frogs. I'm talking about Sizmic and Horny toad type. Personally, I've twitched them in heavy cover. I'm wondering who has success with faster retrieves. I saw a guy using a fast, steady retieve without pausing. I'm wondering what is the most effective. thanks

I use the Horny Toad and like to twitch it through thick cover like yourself, that's where i've had the most luck. I'm sure burning it across the surface will produce as well, I just haven't tried it.

You can also twitch the horny toad through the thin layer of junk on the surface (scum?) like a top water bait. The scum is just thick enough to support the weight of the frog but also thin enough to allow good action.

With the Horny Toad I prefer a "pull, pull, pause" retrieve with the pause lasting maybe 2 seconds while i reel up the slack in the line.

Most of the time I throw them and buzz 'em back like a buzzbait. I save the twitchin' stuff for Spro's and the like.

My partner and I both fish these like buzzbaits.

I usually burn it for a few seconds and then pause, burn it, pause. This retrieve usually gets hits.

I picked up some Bass Dozer Swim Shaky Jigs, which I attach a Zoom Horny Toad.

I either bounce it along the bottom or retrieve slowly with a few twitches.

This has been very successful,because it's something they haven't seen.

As Bass Dozer pointed out, frogs spend most of their time trying to burrow in the mud to escape predators.

If you like the HornyToad, try the Stanley Ribbit frog. almost like a buzzbait, and they now make a floating one.

Last year I started fishing a horny toad on the bottom on a t-rig. I couldn't find the big girls but I caught a bunch around a pound and a half.

i use Canyon Plastics frogs , a buzz type frog , i retrieve it with a steady retrieve as slowly as possible , keeping it on top and the legs slowly churning . i found that i catch alot more fish that way then using hollow body frogs letting them sit on mats .

slow or fast depends on the mood the fish are in. hard pull and stop is good too

I usually burn them like a buzz bait in and out of thick cover.  Also effective, is through standing timber, the slow decent on the pause around stumps, and trunks is irresistible with the flapping legs; the slower decent than a buzz or spinnerbait keeps it in the strike zone just a bit longer.

spent a lot of time as a kid down at our pond watching frogs swim.  I try to duplicate that action (very light twitch....long pause...dive and swim a short distance....pause again at the surface...light twitch...you get the idea). 

I've buzzed them past cattails and pads, then made the exact same cast and worked it like a real frog and got bit.

There are a lot of frog presentations that work well.  This just works best for me most of the time.

It's most difficult for me to stay patient and work it slow.

Then I get the crap scared out of me when that explosion happens!  It's addictive!!
