The Young Gun Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Right now I'm using berkey vanish FC and I've heard nothing but bad reviews on it.. I have a 4ft leader on my jig rod of 14# test and I'm afraid I'm going to lose my jigs with it. I'm fishing 1/2oz Siebert Outdoors "Big O" jigs and 1/2 oz swim jigs.. What # test do you think I should buy? I'm fishing <12 FOW or less pitching docks and lay downs. Thanks for the advice! 1 Quote
averagebass123 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Berkley vanish SUCKS! I don't use fluoro anymore, but if i did I would go with maybe seagur invisX Quote
wnybassman Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Even though I am a Vanish guy, I don't recommend it as a leader. More often than not guys that have problems with it are using it as a leader. I don't think Vanish has the shock absorption other lines have, and as a leader with braid all the shock is concentrated on a short chunk of flouro. And I think Vanish works out for me because I tend to use rods that are slightly lighter/softer than I should. My jig rod is straight 17 pound Vanish, but I wouldn't be afraid to drop down to 14. Super User iabass8 Posted May 6, 2013 Super User Posted May 6, 2013 Prior to tatsu, i used red label on my jig and trig rods with no issues (aside from some abrasion resistance but it's give and take with cheaper fluoro) and had no issues at all. I still use it on my squarebills and lipless baits. 15# fluoro would get you through just about any situation. make sure to just check for frays. I use the san diego jam knot and don't experience any break offs due to knot failure. Quote
JigMe Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I used red label years ago, before I switched to Invisx. Red label is a great line for the price, but you HAVE to use line conditioner on it. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted May 6, 2013 Super User Posted May 6, 2013 I use Red label exclusively. But also exclusively as leader material. I have ZERO issues with it, and I dare say I love it. Is it the best? I doubt it. But it works for me on many levels. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 6, 2013 Global Moderator Posted May 6, 2013 I use Red Label as my mainline for jigs, plastics, and shakyheads. I used to use InvisX until I tried Red Label and couldn't really tell the difference. Quote
nascar2428 Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I use red label for my leaders only, use braid as my main line. Quote
Got1Fishing Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I have used the Red Label on spinning reels, and baitcaster reels... It just has too much memory in my opinion. I usually tie on 10lb for crankbaits and plastics, and I fish about 1-2 a week, and it still had too much memory. Any suggestions on a fluorocarbon line with less memory that's not too hard on the pockets? Quote
TNBassin' Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 Red Label bathed in KVD LnL is great and gives that line virtually no memory. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted May 6, 2013 Super User Posted May 6, 2013 For just leader purposes I don't think how you could go wrong with red label given its price. If you don't like it for whatever reason you aren't out much. I fish and have fished many types of floro. Seagar ranks up there as one on best lines I have used. Abrisix may give the abrasion resistance you would desire for dock fishing but I am not saying red label couldn't get the job done. Quote
averagebass123 Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 What does line conditioner and other sprays that you put on your line do? I see people spray it on their lines sometimes. Quote
ColdSVT Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I have Red Label on every rod but one. my heavy froggin rod which also doubles as a heavy cover jiggin stick. that lady gets 65# power pro is it the best flouro oit there? no, but for the price I dont think it can be beat. sure there is some spool memory when it sits for ahwile but a little conditioner will cure that Quote
