How Bad Did I Screw Up My Reel?

I was attempting to clean and lube my reel, apparently I do not know how to take apart my reel properly. I got it all back together ( uncleaned and not lubricated ) except one piece.

This is a Abu Garcia ProMax 2.

The silver bar right above my spool ( I think its called the cam screw? ) had a spring on it which I can not get back on to save my life ( at least not with it being the proper way ) I didn't even know this piece had a spring as I've never seen it. So how bad if at all will this affect my reel?

P.s: I now know that bar/cam screw should only be taken off to access the magnetic break area.

Any tips on fixing it would be awesome. Thanks

Do u have a schematic? I would recommend searching youtube for a how to video of your reel. Also the Abu Garcia site has schematics for most of their reels. All else fails contact a reel smith, they should be able to help. The Max line of reels are considered by many as disposable so finding someone that will fix it may present a challenge.

It's far from being that messed up I would hope considering its just 1 little spring, I tested it after seemed to worl but something still felt off about it.

that screw holds the brake sideplate to the frame. No big deal if the spring is gone. ideally u want all pieces back where they should be but this isn't catastrophic.

So I could try putting it back on the side where the break aystem is since that's where it goes anyways?

This is the reason I do not want to take a reel apart to give it a rad paint job. Im afraid I will screw it up too much

That spring is designed is to keep that screw pressed against the brake side plate so if the screw backs out, it won't allow the sideplate to fall off during a cast. Just make sure that screw is buttoned down tight every now and then, and you should be ok. I'd maybe try to get it back in some how once more though.

Lets review this; your reel needs service, you don't know how to do this and you tried but put it back together incorrectly...correct?

DVT is a reel service company and site sponsor. Just trying to reassemble the reel correctly isn't achieving your goal to have the reel cleaned and functioning better than new.

No, not 100% correct but close. I got it back togethet correctly except that spring due to it popping out and not seeing or knowing where it came from or how to put it back. I am considering calling DVT to let them fix it but debating on if its worth it considering it is a pro max and costs 60$.. is it worth sending in for their repair/ipgrade is the question and can anyone speak from peesonal experience?

If it were my Tourney Pro or Smoke I'd send it to em in a heartbeat. If it were my Quantum Nitrous or Shimano Callisto, however, I don't think it would be worth it. So what I'm saying is no, I would not send the Pro Max in. It's your reel though and you'll be the one using it. It might be worth it to know for sure it is performing as well as it can possibly perform!

I do not have personal experience with DVT, their site list basic reel cleaning at $22 + shipping.

I do know how to do basic service on my reels, however take them to a professional technician for service; check the bearing, drags, etc Most of my reels are over 15 years old, a few are 2 years old, they cast and function better than new, due to being properly serviced.

Where can you get a new reel for $22 + shipping that is as good as your reel?
