What Size Braided Line For Swim Jig?

Share your wisdom, if you use braided line to fish swim Jig and tell us why?

 

I will start, I am using 50lb 832 for swim jigs because any size smaller than 50lb might dig into the spool.

I use 8lb Fireline on my spinning gear and 20lb Suffix 832 on my baitcasters with swim jigs. Never had a problem with line digging into spool. I don't need or like heavier lines when I'm not fishing heavy cover. I use braid for everything.

No it's a myth in my opinion. I use 30 for cranking and 40 for my jigs.

Yes they have happened but I've never had a problem getting them out.

You misunderstand.  What good is tape next to the spool when the line digs in on an outer layer?  Think what you are referring to is the line never slipping on the spool because it digs into the tape.  What the other poster is referring to is the line digging into itself (down into lower layers) when a lot of tension is put on the line....such as thumbing the spool to pull a fish out of a weed bed.   The line slips between layers of line.  Then on the next cast you can usually kiss your lure goodbye.

Not all of us have your skill.  I can backlash 40# braid if I get too careless.  I probably could backlash 65# if I tried hard enough!

yeah, that actually happened to me few times using 30lb braid on BC. I got a good fish out of the weed, but next cast is NC swim jig at the bottom of the lake.

15lb flurocarbon or even smaller than that. When I throw a swimjig I am not using it the same way I would a big flipping jig. Yes I still will throw a swim jig in to would but I am not worried about it that much that I need to use braid.

FOr me, Swim jig goes in the same category as spinnerbbaits, chatterbaits, scrounger heads, and hollowbody swimmers. I use 30lb braid on a 7'2MH Powell 723.

If the cover is really thick but the fish want a moving bait or the swim jig is hot, Ill tied it on my flipping rods that have 50lb braid and i wont use a leader.

Ive never had a problem with braid digging, back off the drag just A LITTLE MORE, than you would for mono for fluoro lines.

I use 50 lbs, because I don't have lots of extra reels. I get by with what I have.

When I "need" to use braid I use 50#.

If not which is most of the time, I use my jog rod which has 20# floro.

I use 30lb on everything, never had a problem with digging.  I use Spider Wire Stealth, it's way quiter than others and seems to be smooth even after big hook sets.  I will say though that I have broken off baits on the cast, but it was a colasal gust of wind causing a nest from the nether regions. lol

I've used both 20# and 30# 832 for swim jigs without any issues. I settled on 30 basically just for diameter and fishing in a little more muck that I used to.

I am gonna give 30lb a try, since I don't flip with swim jigs and 50 lb is probably too heavy for it. Since none of yall got issues with "digging" with 30lb, I am going to buy a spool and give it a go.

After your first fish is caught on that reel with the braid, cast it lightly to make sure you didnt dig in, i say light because if your wail it and it did dig, then you will be picking a back lash. If you cast it lightly and feel where it did dig in, pull the line out, fix it, and then ease off of your drag so then next time when you set the hook and start reeling, your line will come out rather than down tight into your spool. Braid has zero stretch, so it helps to compensate a little. When i said ease off the drag, i mean only a little more than your noraml setting.

Drags being too tight for braid is common for diggin.

nothing really wrong with 20#. if I were fishing very sparse cover i'd still be using 20#.

I use it on all my bc's except my lews super duty.

I use 50# but I use that rod for other applications. I also use 16# fluoro and 12# hybrid. Just depends on the cover or what else I have tied on.
