Tuning Up A Spinning Reel?

I was just wondering if there is anyway to improve a spinning reel when it comes to tuning. I know in a baitcaster new bearings make it cast farther, but does it have any affect in a spinning reel?

I use spinning exclusively, both in fresh and saltwater. My freshwater reels are mid priced $100 is as much as I'm willing to spend, saltwater reels I spend up to around $220, I think that's mid priced too.  I have never made any improvements to a spinning reel as far as upgrading any bearings or using anything but the stock drag.  If I were to replace the drag washers I would upgrade, we're not talking a major expense, as of yet I've not needed to. The drags on every reel I own work quite well and have been tested with fish of all sizes, additionally they are all smooth on retrieval.  From my own point of view, I'm not going to fix something that isn't broken.

The only thing I can think of upgrading in a spinning reel that would make any significant improvements would to be 1) upgrade the drag and 2)replace any bushings with bearings.  You could upgrade the current bearings to better ones to try to increase smoothness but by the time and money spent on upgrading bearings currently in use you would've been better off buying the next model or two up.

 

  There are no supertuning improvements that I can think of to make a spinning reel cast farther or better such as a baitcast reel seeing as how the spool does not rotate.  How far a spinning reel casts depends greatly on how the spool was designed.

Just be sure to have the spinning reel serviced by a pro and that you have the gears greased and the bail oiled.

 

Be sure no line is hidden under the spool which can take away from the reel's action.

 

Always double check the reel screw on those reels where you can change the handle from right to left and left to right.

 

And don't sit on the reel, like I did in the boat, as you will put the bail out of alighnment.

spinning reels not casting as far more have to do with the rod....if you have a cone of flight rod set up watch your line during the cast how it goes through the guides...good built custom rods will let you cast further and also the microwave guide system is supposed to help casting further also 

 

i havent tried it yet but next weekend the rod im building will be done with them

Only thing ive ever done to a spinning reel was add a bearing in the knob, did that on a fuego and my stradic fj. Other than that, there pretty much ready to go.

How did you manage that? A smoother stradic would be nice...

Go on eBay and search for stradic knob or handle bearing, there's a guy that sells them for like $8

On the stradic 4000 fi that bearing already comes inside the knob assembly.  I recently replaced my knob and had to remove both the bushing and bearing from the old and use them in the new knob.  I do believe that same exact bearing is used in knobs of other models as well.

Polishing the shaft the spool rides on will make it slightly smoother, and there are probably drag and bearing upgrades you can do if you want.  There's not nearly as much to upgrade inside a spinning reel as there is in a baitcaster.

Pay attention to the line roller bearing, keeping it clean and spinning freely throughout the season.
