Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 4, 2013 Super User Posted May 4, 2013 Well d**n it all. I just got laid off today. I am now a tradesman in need. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. Especially fishing gear or just straight up cash. I'm so depressed I don't know what to do! My life is over! The hell am I gonna do now!?! Wait I'm a tradesman!!! This is part of the job. I got three guaranteed jobs lined up already. Only problem is two are in South Dakota and one is all over the country. So I'm gonna draw my unemployment for a few weeks, live on my severance package, and start hunting close to home on Monday. I figure if I ain't found nothing in two weeks oh the well. Time to hit the road and make that cash. I wouldn't give my trades away for a d**n thing. My Brother knuckle draggers and sparkys are already helping me hunt work around the state. I can honestly say life is ******* great. Even being laid off. Life is great. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted May 4, 2013 Super User Posted May 4, 2013 Haliburton is doing a bunch of hiring in North Dakota for the oil fields. That sucks bud. I'll keep my eyes and ears open. Enjoy the time with the family while you can. Quote
shootermcbob Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Sorry to hear that. Really do hope you find something, and fast. As stated above, good time to really enjoy the family! Quote
Topwaterspook Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Been there, done that, got the T shirt to prove it............lol. Hey man , check out Wheeling ,WV.'s book. Last time I spoke with them they had 400 travelers working. Things up here in Pittsburgh are still slow but that shale oil has been putting people to work. Good luck . Stitch Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 4, 2013 Author Super User Posted May 4, 2013 Thanks guys. I'm checking out haliburton on Monday. I'm also gonna call the hall down in bham. Last I checked they have a ton of work going on at the nuke plants around the state. Its supposed to pay great, plus its close to home. Only downside. It may make my pee glow. Biggest plus? It may make my pee glow. I can think of no better parlor trick than that. Quote

Stitch Its really picked up down here from a year ago. The company I was with just kind can't find anything this month. They got some mine work, but I'm not certified for that. Construction as a whole has picked up down here. Quote

I've found a very promising lead, with a company that does ironworking. It will mainly be in state. Which could be a good thing. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 5, 2013 Author Super User Posted May 5, 2013 Well it looks like my wife is about to have a big decision to make. Industrial electrical is kinda slim around here right now. However I've found plenty of jobs in other states. I ain't given up on Alabama yet, as far as electrical goes. I mean I've barely started looking yet. Its just that if I can't find anything here, then its either jump trade or hit the road. Depending on pay jumping trade isnt always a vad thing. She has to decide whether she and the child are gonna come along too if I take out of state work. Sometimes life sucks. Quote
CoBass Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Sorry to hear about that, hope everything works out. One thing to keep in mind about unemployment is that they will consider any money you got in your severance package as income. For example, if you normally made $1,000.00 per week and got a $5,000.00 severance package, they will not start paying you for five weeks. When I got laid off, I got no severance but I did have three weeks of vacation saved up. They started my benefits after the three weeks was up and told me if I got any money in severance it would apply to those funds as well. Quote
jhoffman Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I have my background in IT from networking to computer programming and two years ago was out of work for an entire year. I always envied those who got laid off and their ability to hunt and fish every day. That is till it happened, it all gets pretty boring after doing it all day every day. Quote
Super User Teal Posted May 5, 2013 Super User Posted May 5, 2013 Sorry to hear that Raider, i hope the job hunt does well. You shouldnt stay out of work long. Good luck buddy. Oh and since we all know thaat you have a little more time on your hands, you better be posting some fish pics!!! Quote
Super User South FLA Posted May 5, 2013 Super User Posted May 5, 2013 Or....... You could move to where the Big Bass live....CA, TX, FL! I know that construction has really picked up around here as well both commercial and residential. Quote

I know that construction has really picked up around here as well both commercial and residential. Cali is out of the question. Too restrictive on firearms. Otherwise it would be nice. Texas might be nice. Florida would be awesome. Aside from all the Yankees. I could deal with Florida. If commercial has picked up then that could land me some iron working jobs. Is there a big union presence down there? Quote

Florida from what I know have very little union workers compared to the northern states, but I know Tropical Shipping as a huge employer of welders/ironworkers https://www.tropical.com/external/en/ Quote

Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 6, 2013 Author Super User Posted May 6, 2013 Didn't even make it 3 hours after I got my yellow paper and severance pay. I start with my new company on Wednesday. I went to apply, filled out half the application. My new boss came in the room, shook my hand, and said he just got off the phone with my previous boss. He said my old boss was nothing but complimentary about me, and sang my praises. He told me what the company does work wise and asked if they were to hire me when I could start. I told him Monday. We shook hands and he said he would call me this afternoon with his decision. Ten minutes later he called me and asked if I could start sooner. My first day is Wednesday. So much for fishing all week long. 1 Quote

As well as 20 new cranks on sale half off, With a little of it. I can send you a couple gnarly fishing lures I got. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted May 7, 2013 Super User Posted May 7, 2013 Gotta love bosses like that. Congrats. The CEO of where I'm at right now said he would write me a recommendation should I apply to a new job. I guess he's ready to get rid of me? Quote

The CEO of where I'm at right now said he would write me a recommendation should I apply to a new job. I guess he's ready to get rid of me? My buddy and I were discussing it last night. We think I'm about to become a loaner electrician between these two companies. Basically when one runs out of work I get "loaned" to the other company until they run out or I'm needed back at the other. He's a 23 year journeyman so I have faith in what he says. He told me its actually a common practice between smaller companies when they have a worker they want to keep, but work dries up. Only time will tell though. I think the CEO was complimenting you. It sounds like a weird sort of compliment, but you carpet walkers are strange. I'm not hip on the trends of the office world. If he wanted you gone I believe you would have your walking papers by now. Quote
