The Infamous Jig

I've got them in every colour, skirt material, size,hook, style. More jig rods than anything else in my lockers. No better way of catching fish, than setting hook with a jig.

As much as I love them if you haven't guessed I often wonder if there's such a thing as throwing it too often?

What are the times that you really would rather throw something else other than, whether it be due to weather, time of year ( prespawn, spawn, post, summer, winter) water clarity and temp?

I like to start with a jig, then if thats not working I go to something else, and usually come back to it.

I always have a jig tied on, but there are times when cranks or other soft plastics work better.

There are a few times I won't throw a jig, but I do use them a lot. I don't use many bottom jigs because the fish in my local ponds are nearly always suspended, but I use swim jigs quite a bit. If the water is very stained or muddy I will throw a chatterbait or spinnerbait.

I use flippin jigs only when I want to hit specific shallow water cover, so if the fish are up shallow holding tight to cover the jig is a great tool. I also like to use football jigs, but more as a search bait in deep water transition areas, or on shallow to medium rock bars. swim jigs are great when you are in clear water or highly pressured systems that see a million spinnerbaits each week. These are the only times I use jigs, there are so many techniques out there that will produce fish on any given day, that using a jig most of the time to me is just goofy. that being said If I need a kicker fish in a tournament I will flip either a jig or throw a frog. I always have at least 4 rods rigged with some kind of jig though.

Dont second guess yourself.If your instincts say fish the jig then you better fish it.There is nothing like the tap on the end of your line and the weightless feeling as you know the fish has inhaled your bug.When you set the hook with strong hooks and strong line and you dont know if its going to be a dink or a donkey.Thats what its all about to me.

Only time I really don't like fishing a jig is if there is lots of snot moss that keeps fouling my bait. Other than that I don't know if there is such a thing as fishing a jig too much. If it ain't broke....

I like to start with a jig, then if thats not working I go to something else, and usually come back to it.

I start off with a swim jig to cover as much water as I can, then switch to a fliping jig and find anything cover wise to throw it into. Then I'll drag it and see if can find something to drag it over or through.

 

I'll switch to a squarebill and depending on if I get hit but no takers, I'll go small or finesse.

 

I always go back to a jig and the last cast is always with a swim jig.

 

I do this year round. I really don't think you can throw it too much. There are so many different prey you can immitate with a jig.
