Pumpkinseed Color Question

 A group of guys here are trying to determine where the “Pumpkinseed” color originated from. Did the color come from the seed of a pumpkin or did it come from a Pumpkinseed (aka Perch or Sunfish)?

 

My vote is from the Pumpkinseed fish.

I think he was referring to the color of the soft plastics and not the actual fish color. I could be wrong though.

I remember when the color came out in the early 80's Field and stream did an article about it and its popularity.It was so popular Mann's baits had a tackle pack for sale with every type of lure in that color scheme.Its from the color of cooked pumpkin like canned or in a pie.Pumpkinseed sunfish have very little if any brown tones.

If this is the case, I always thought pumpkin was the orange hue and seed was refering to the black flake...another example is watermelon seed, and green pumpkin was orange and green mixed together. I dunno. And regarding Maico's answer, I saw a pumpkin seed first hand the other day plucked off a bed, looks just like some of those baits from xcalibur and Jann's....

Yeah I am trying to figure out where the color came from. Either they were referring to a perch color(aka a pumpkinseed) or a real seed from a pumpkin.   lol I know its an odd question

It is a little known fact that it actually isn't refferring to either.  In actuality a guy at zoom was a big fan of Smashing Pumpkins.  The color is designed after the scheme of their 3rd studio albumn.  The guy really like watermellon seed fish doctor worms the best and on one batch of them he screwed up the color combinations and ended up with what looked like a brown turd i.e. turd worm.  He didn't think that would sell, I mean it was the 80's, so he had to go with something more kosher.  The Pumpkins had just released their 3rd albumn "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness"  On the cover it has a lady sitting in a star and you'll notice that star is very close to the color refferred to as pumpkin seed.  Years later I talked to him (Jimmy Zoom III) and he told me he used to like the pumpkin seed lizard, but recently he said he couldn't seem to catch them on it anymore, but he was taking this guy fishing and he was just killing him out of the back of the boat using a freaking watermellon seed fish doctor worm.  He was extremely hesitant to switch over, but once he did he was catching fish like a pro.

I have a vintage 1980s " Fishing Lures" magazine ( from the Bassin')with an article that talks about it. Story was Ed Chambers, when Zoom was a small company, Made a batch of Amber that came out wrong for some reason, it was cloudy. At some point he had a tackle store ask him if he had anything "different", so he pawned of the mistake batch. A couple anglers won. Couple tourneys, and it got mentioned, creating a craze at the time, eventully making Zoom a national company. Pumpkin was the color, seed is the black flake. Not sure if it's true, but the article was done in conjunction with Ed Chambers, wih pics of the operation.
