jignfule Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Geared up my NRX852 last night, and slipped the rod sleeve on it, all was well. Put the rods in my vehicle this morning and went to the lake. When I pulled the rod sleeve off, about 1-1/2'' of the tip had snapped off. I have no idea how it happened. I am extremely careful with all my G.Loomis rods. I was the only one handling them. QUESTION : Should I just put on a new rod tip. That would only leave a 1-1/2'' of rod to the next guide. Should I go to the hassle and expense of sending it back and see what G. Loomis will do. I really don't want to waste my wild card on this one. These are extremely brittle rods. Quote
Super User Teal Posted May 2, 2013 Super User Posted May 2, 2013 I would not attempt to fix or alter the rod. See what loomiis will do without the wildcard, if nothin or really expensive, then you need to use the wildcard. Thats what they are for. 1 Quote
Quitlimpin Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I'm with Teal on this one. After you get done puking, contact Shim-Loomis and see what the protocol is. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted May 2, 2013 Super User Posted May 2, 2013 Man that sucks, sorry to hear that. It sounds like something happened to it before or during transport. Really, really sucks to see that. I would say see what happens when you send it in, and if you have to I would use the wildcard. Curious though, I've always wondered if a rod glove could actually "damage" the rods or guides when you pull it off and on. I use Rod Gloves that I always think while I slide it on could damage the guides. I bought the more expensive neoprene for my 2 of my GLX rods, still I am very careful when I slide them on. Does anyone else get paranoid when putting on a rod glove/sleeve on your rods? I see videos where they just whip them off and on, while I am very careful and slide them off or on slowly. lol Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 2, 2013 Super User Posted May 2, 2013 That sucks but use the wild card. As far as rod sleeves go I have no worries. I mean if you are worried about a rod sleeve then how do you fish with the rod let alone set the rod down in your boat. Quote

Super User Hooligan Posted May 3, 2013 Super User Posted May 3, 2013 Don't wild card it. Send it to them, politely explain your dilemma and ask if they have a reasonable explanation. They're good folks, and I would be shocked if they didn't take care of you on it. 4 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 3, 2013 Super User Posted May 3, 2013 For a rod in that price range I would want it to be exactly the way it was produced, I would totally rule out any repair. Quote

Super User OkobojiEagle Posted May 3, 2013 Super User Posted May 3, 2013 I would go into my bathroom, look at myself in the mirror and say "what was I thinking to buy a fishing rod that cost nearly 500.00!"... oe 3 Quote
ColdSVT Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 years ago I fell on my face in the boat and broke my GLX. I called loomis and tne dude told to break it up and but in an envelope to save on shipping. I had a new GLX 10 days later. I was pleased to say the least! loomis customer service has always been awesome for some stupid reason I sold that rod Quote

skeletor6 Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Those days are over,,,,,,,your dealing with Shimano now! But regardless I would have them replace it, as snooker's said, why would you pay that kind of money for a doctored up blank???? Those no questions asked lifetime warranties on their rods are terrible. If shimano integrated those on the Loomis lineup I would be a very happy man. Not much is broken off the tip of his rod, his "doctored up" NRX would still be ridiculously sensitive, I am not sold that the repairs made by Shimloomis would totally kill the functionality and purpose of an NRX rod Maybe if it was 6'', but 1.5'' really is not that much on a 84'' rod. Anyways, you do only get 1 wild-card. I figured the value on those cards are around $100 or so. I do not like the idea of being on your "last life" if the rod does break and the wild-card is used. Echoing what others have said, I would contact them and see what they would do with your rod first before going ahead and using the wild-card. Exhaust all options then use the wild-card, that is my philosophy on the situation. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 4, 2013 Super User Posted May 4, 2013 If you fix the rod tip by replacing the tip guide you void your warranty, wild card is now useless. Did you mail order the rod? Or buy it off the shelf? Either way contact whomever the retailer is, they may be able to solve the problem due to the fact you never fished with it. The $100 Loomis replacement "warranty" sucks, you shouldn't be worried about what to do, the rod should be replaced with no questions asked, it's a new rod! Tom Quote

The rep. said in his opinion it was obiviously NOT a mgf. defect because the break occurred during transportation and not while fishing.(?) I still could sent the rod in, but it was assurantly a waste of my time amd money, use the wild card.(this was his attitude) Now any impact that occured to that rod was minimal. If it was not a defect the NRX rods must be ultra brittle. In 50 years of fishing and dozens of rods I have never had and issue. So apparently now my option is for me to put a new tip guide on the NRX and see if it works acceptably. (and not void the wild card) Then when it breaks in the future I still have my wild card, or use the wild card now and fish in fear. As brittle as they appear to be, it will happen again. Anyway what would you now suggest and good-bye to any aspirations of owning a NRX 893 and 803. Too bad because they are fun to fish. Quote
Super User Teal Posted May 6, 2013 Super User Posted May 6, 2013 Still say wild card. Whats the point of a 500$ rod that now has an incorrect taper. Fixing a tip like that is something I would do to a Berkely Lightning Rod or a Shimano Convergence. other wise, i replace the rod. Quote

I had no idea that a replaced tip guide will void their warranty. It won't void the wild card to put a tip on it. Heck, you could bust the upper 1/3 of the rod off and just ship the lower part for the wild card. Quote
