quanjig Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I had 5 keepers and another handful of non keepers. 4 of the keepers would have gone around 15lbs tho! Fish were suspended being very opportunistic about chasing a smartly presented bait. Foumd one point at the end of the day that had 4 fish right on it with the wind blowing hard on it. Not the most productive day but its always nice to get out and get a couple quality fish! 1 Quote
The Bream Reaper Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 That's a great day, especially for August! I think I need to invest in a portable depth finder. I worked all of the spots where they should have been (though we all know they are rarely where they should be!) and don't really have a game plan after that. I think it would be helpful if i could see where those suspended fish are while cruising around or even where theyre concentrating on those points near deeper channels and haunts with some help from the electronics.  Ive got a lot more excuses if anyone wants to hear them.  Quan, no need to share specifics, but by any chance were you down lake or up lake? I never made it too far out of sight of FH marina...wondering if there are generally more spots holding fish in August down towards the main dam or up towards bull run. Maybe there's no method to the madness though.  Looks like it can get much deeper down reservoir. quanjig Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 One spot I will let you in on, the second is not a community hole and just can't let out! Head up lake and fish just above Ryan's dam at the mouth of red house creek. Nice little drop on the down lake side of the creek, just above the dam. A graph helps a great deal this time of year, especially when fishing unfamiliar off shore stuff, it's important to find the depth the bait is holding and try to look for tha bass feeding just below them. This time of year the bait that is not visible, or nervous as my friend puts it, hold a little closer to the thermocline. When you find the depth they are holding, you can start running a little bit of a pattern out there by running to points and targeting that depth. You can also eliminate areas if you don't graph the bait in those areas! 1 Quote
quanjig Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Sorry, yes, down lake is generally deeper, you can go way up in the rivers, bull run of the lake Jackson side and catch fish. The res fishes like three different bodies of water. Down lake fishes just like a reservoir the middle fishes a little more like a lake, and bull run and the lake Jackson side fish like rivers. It's a great place to fish and learn. Lots of wildlife. Just my favorite place to fish!! 1 Quote
s freud Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I always try to pay attention to quan tips. Thanks. Quote
nitro557 Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I was thinking as I posted the above I need to follow this guy one day just to see where and what bat and such, don't be scare if you get followed by the red boat one day haha Quote
quanjig Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Thanks guys! It just takes time on the water. I've put in 25 years on this place but only in the last few years have I really started to feel like I can be consistent. I also think that my decision making has gotten better. A lot of that credit goes to what I read here on BR! Sometimes you have to read between the lines and learn from your mistakes but much of what gets posted in several sections here will translate to every place we fish and will result in more fish caught! Plus, you can only watch me fish if you can keep up with me out there! LOL! One big hint to being successful from post spawn till the temp drops into the 40's.......... the wind is your friend!! 1 Quote
bigbasshunter Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Boated 8 keepers yesterday from 330-8pm all on offshore drop offs and ledges. Water temp 87f with 3+ foot clairity. Deep crankin was putting them in the boat. Quote

quanjig Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 ^^^^^ Ha! I'm hardly the person you want as a guide out there! I really appreciate the thought, but sooo many other sticks out there that really fish that place well! Quote

shsabres Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Any tips on where to fish near Bull Run Marina? We drop in there but only find small ones under 1 lb. thats generally downstream from the launch and in about 2' of water. Quote
s freud Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 I have not fished there because I don't have a pass, but would love to. I have kayaked out of there a couple times and think there are some nice coves I would explore right up river and lots of overhangs to fish under. Someone may have given similar advice earlier in this thread or the one for nova fishing. Quote
shsabres Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 If launching from bull run, go up and fish the big cove by the soccer fields. Don't be afraid to get really shallow! Is that to the left or right of the launch area? Quote
sundog Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Man I wish I would have found this forum earlier in the summer. I have just been getting back into fishing since about June here on the Res and I'm telling you it has been a learning experience lol. It is completely different than what I am used to. I grew up fishing tournies in Al in the rivers where it was mainly shallow fishing.  From what I have learned fishing the res is that I am completely out of my comfort zone in the main body of water since I am fishing from a one man inflatable and no depth or fish finder and really not used to the drastic drop offs. So I try to stick to the fingers branching from the main body of water in the shallows mainly.  I had some success around the Lake Ridge HOA launch and from Lake Ridge Marina i usually go right and head up to the rowing place sandy something, theres a nice branch there that goes all the way up to hampton road that i like but if you go under the bridge it gets pretty shallow quickly.  I havent had much luck getting the bass to chase flashy baits like cranks or spinner/chatterbaits in the shallows so I mainly stick to soft plastics Im a texas rig kinda guy anyways lol. So any advice on where to catch and types of cranks would be greatly appreciated so I can cover more area lol.  Anyways just wanted to say hi and im hoping I can add some knowledge here once I get some lol. Im fishing out of a one man green pontoon boat so dont be a stranger. 1 Quote

s freud Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 What time you going out? I could be down, or if a couple others are interested in going out, I could bring my boat and we could have a little competition. Although with my luck lately, I would try to get in nitro's boat if you were to pick one! Quote
