Plenty of fish feed on crayfish on the res. the fall and spring are good times to catch fish on jigs. Right now if you can find the right areas, you can destroy them on football jigs!

I wasn't implying you are not able to recognize feeding fish, just that it usually is really apparent when they are busting bait rather than just rushing in and scattering the bait and making them nervous!

From what I have seen and verified through other more knowledgeable anglers, the big fish busting the surface in the summer are usually carp. No one seems to know why they do it.

carp are weird, so i don't doubt that.

but i have definetly seen big bass crushing shad near the surface...not too much last saturday, but earlier in July (my first time out on the res) it was like every other 5 minutes there would be some action near the surface...and definitely bass feeding/breaking because we caught a few on spooks and poppers.  I like to keep top water rigged even in the dead of august at high noon just in case...

Fished till noon with jspoone and had 5 keepers and dinkfest, largest being 3lb. Water visibility was ~3ft. Caught mostly flipping creatures and dragging big worms on walls, drop offs, and grass.

Well as I was surfing the BR pages I notice a BR big fish tournament.  I was thinking we could start a Occoquan Reservoir version of this.  It's simple.. Each week or every two we post our biggest fish caught on the Reservoir.  You have to take a picture with your fish on a tape measure or some other measuring device ie. golden ruler, yard stick ect. Nothing to win nothing to lose, all for the fun of a challenge. What do you say? Everyone in?

Sounds like fun to me.  Could just do a "fish of the month" or something like that for bragging rights.

That said I likely don't stand a chance.  I think I've been relegated to dink duty.

I need to tag along with some of the experts at the RES to figure out how to catch them first LOL

I was out there today as well.  only 2 keepers...had trouble finding them.  I tried cranking and c-rigging deep and just couldn't locate any fish.  all mine were from drop shotting a finesse worm on isolated cover.  no bueno.
