Lubricating A Baitcast Reel?

I had a cousin tell me I'd be wasting money buying any kind of lubrication for my reels to just use wd-40.. my reels have not been lubricated and can't cast as far as his using the same exact reel and lure set up... any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Your cousin is wrong. Search here on BassResource.com for baitcaster maintenance, oil, grease etc. You'll find a lot of info.

I would never use WD40 on a casting reel. I have mostly Daiwa reels and use the supplied oil on the bearings. I use Rem Oil on the level wind and other parts as needed.

"WD40 overhaul" reels are my favorite.  The drag and IAR slip so I buy them really cheap and fix them.

your cousin's setup most likely casts farther because he is doing something(it might be wrong but it is something) compared to nothing. I am a strong believer in proper maintenance. Glad to see that you found some useful info and good luck with the maintenance!

You don't/didn't say what reel/s you and your cuz are comparing.

Looking at the 1600/3600 schematics, you have 4 bearing packs that need deep cleaned.

The reels have a plastic tab that holds the spool shafts adjustments, that do dis-engage and cause loss of casting adjustments.

Gun oil REM can b used, so can sewing machine oil, but there are tons of quality reel oils on-line at different websites...

I have several BCs that need lubing.  One in particular.  I need to find a decent oil to use.

WD-40 and similar spray lubes contain solvents to make them sprayable. They actually act as a degreaser and have no business anywhere near the inside of a fishing reel. It's a short term band-aid at best. There is no magic in the lube area. The key is to clean and maintain regularly using appropriate lubes for the application.

The Shimano reel oil and/or the Quantum Hot Sauce Reel Oil have been good to me.

Definitely don't use WD-40... It's too low in viscosity. Oil will disappear shortly after using it a couple of times. I use Ardent Reel Butter Bearing Lube. Take the bearing out. Clean them, and then put a couple of drops on them, then after about 15 minutes, set them down on a paper towel and let it soak up the excess oil. You don't want excess oil getting in places it doesn't need to be, plus extra oil will just cause dirt to stick.

I re oiled my bearings on a brand new Shimano Chronarch, before even using it, and the spool has such a better free spool. It's because the factory sends reels with excess lubricant because they know most people won't do the proper maintenance they need.
