If the water is clear I would recommend using florocarbon line or at least a floro leader. My opinion is that Seaguar Invizx and Abrazx are some of the best out there. The lbs of the line is going to depend on the technique. Which will depend on the depth of the water. Drop shotting is a good technique for smallies. What is the water temp? 1 Quote

There are plenty of weeds and wood in the lake along the shore but the bigger bass stay deep. My wife only throws Senkos and she out fishes me just about everytime we go if I don't something that is near the bottom. I am going to start drop shotting this year and see how I do. If you have a chance to fish the lake prior to the tournament I would make every effort to do so. What works on my lake might not work on the lake your going to fish. Do an internet search on the tournament and see if you can find out what past winners won with. Good luck to you. Quote

mod479 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Use the lightest line you can get away with. I regularly use 4lb test fluoro for clear water. Clear means different things to different people though, I'm talking 20+ feet of water clarity. Yo-zuri hybrid is good stuff, very versatile line, super abrasion resistance. If you can find the 4lb or 6lb, it will cover most anything you'll need to do on that lake if cover is not an issue. Get the camo green color, or clear. I'd concentrate on rock shoals, sandbars, and underwater humps made up of gravel/chunk rock. If they arent spawning yet, they will be staged off those locations in deeper water. In some bodies of water where little cover is present, smallmouths will just follow and ball up schools of bait all day. Find some forage, and the smallies wont be far away. Dont just beat the banks, unless you're seeing fish up that shallow. Find them with a suspending jerkbait or crankbait, and then slowly work the area over with weightless flukes, tubes, football jigs, stick worms, and a dropshot. If you take one thing from my post....get a flashy suspending jerkbait and take the time to tune it. Make sure it suspends, or ever so slightly sinks. Lucky Crafts (pointers) tend to come out of the package ready to go. Most other brands require some modifications. Suspend strips work good, add weight to the bill so it suspends nose down. You can also add split rings to the front hook eyelet to get the same effect. Good luck! 1 Quote

mod479 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 What #lb test or diameter is it? Is it new/fresh? Soak it with some line conditioner if you can get some. (I like the KVD stuff) I like all the colors, but back in the day, my Walmart carried it in only the purple smoke color. I used it for years in the same super clear waters with much success. The green or clear would be better, but dont get hung up on whether they'll see it or not. It is still part fluorocarbon after all. Hybrid breaks at significantly higher loads than it's labeled. 6lb for instance breaks around 10 to 12 lbs. As I've said, it also has excellent abrasion resistance, which is good for dragging jigs through rocks. I wouldnt hesitate to use the 4 or 6lb hybrid for smaller jigs at all. 1 Quote

Some type of craw bait (football head, tube, etc) that way I can cover much of the water colum and see where the bites at. I'm usually beating the bank and that can get me bit and if not ill change the two rods to something completely different example shallow crank and dropshot. Good luck in the tournament 1 Quote
