Frog Fever

I caught my first hollow body frog fish two days ago, and for lack of a better term, I'm hooked. I was using a 7 foot medium heavy rod, and it seemed a little light for horsing the fish out of the weeds I was fishing in. Does anyone have any suggestions for a quality 7 ft Heavy action rod? I don't want to break the bank, but I need something sturdy. I have a 7'6" Heavy but it requires a little more work than I would like to walk the frog using that length of rod. Plus I bank fish a lot and lugging that rod through some of the places I have to go is cumbersome at best. Any suggestions?

I fish a Mojo 7' MH/Fast action rod on my hollowbody frogs. I have no problem getting them out of the thickest junk. Not all power ratings and actions are equal across the manufacturers of rods.  Not to say a Heavy/Fast rod wont work for you, but you'll get better casting from a MH/F so I'd be really certain that's the way you want to go. You may end up getting it and really not liking it. But...you could always turn that into a jig rod if it didn't work out.  

Just my $.02.   I fish Hollowbody frogs a lot....

I use a 7' heavy fast action rod here in FL and wouldnt want anything less. What kind of price range are wanting to stay in.

I got my first bass on a SPRO frog two days ago as well!!!! I landed mine, though I did get three blowups, and missed two. The water here (Philadelphia area) is in the low 60's and the bass arent really committing to the frog yet. Postspawn is when the frog bite gets HOT. You setup sounds ok, but I personally prefer a 7'-ish rod. I use a Powell Endurance 7'1" Heavy EF rod with 65lb braid and a 7.1:1 Revo STX Gen3. Dean Rojas tosses his frogs on a 7'MH rod. You dont need a flipping stick. The shorter rod is WWWWAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY better for walking the frog and skipping. I usually have a pretty high strike to land ratio with that set-up.

the action should depend on the type of cover you fish, a 7' MH for open water or sparse weeds/ wood, and heavy action and 7'6" -8' if it is heavy weeds and thick pads.

I caught 2 nice ones in my tournament on Saturday.  A 4 and a 3.  I used a 6:3:1 reel and a 7' heavy action rod.  I was ripping through new and old grass.  A MH rod would have been better IMO if I wouldn't have been ripping it through some trash.

I went shopping for my first baitcaster a few years back. I'm not sure if you have a Gander Mountain store near you, but their "Gander Mountain" brand rods are actually pretty good.  I frog with a 7" MH casting rod and love it.  I was skeptical at first using store brand product, but I asked the salesman what rod he would suggest and he said the Gander Mtn one. Priced competitively and the quality is very good.

Thanks for the feedback everybody! I'm liking the idea of a MH/Fast somewhere around 7'. Seems like a good place to get the best walking action without giving up the backbone.

I use a 6'6" Berkley Lightning Rod. It was a cheap rod that is pretty heavy, but its a stiff MH. I got it cause I had one more reel than rod and didnt want to pay much. Anywho, I find the 6'6" rod to work just fine and think its easier to walk the dog with the shorter rod. I fish the frog while walking the bank more than in the boat and I find it way easier to navagate the shorter rod while walking the bank. I dont think you need a high priced really sensitive rod for frogging. I figure, if this Lightning Rod snaps, its not a huge deal cause it was pretty cheap.
