Birds Nest

How damaging are birds nest to the strength and quality of your line? Is it something that can really affect the quality of your line, or is it something you don't really need to worry about to much?

If you do it enough and your line doesn't go back on your spool correctly then it can weaken your line! I have had it where i had a few bad backlashes and then a few days later I made a really long cast and half my line went with it! so be carful and don't be scared to re-spool every once in a while.

Not all "birds nests" are equal! It is the ones that cause your line to kink in spots that cause damage and increase the risk of breaking off a good fish. Most of the time a slight overrun is not a problem, but I am very careful to try to avoid and feel for any signs of damage as I reel the line back on the spool. If there is any question I either re-spool immediately or retire the reel until I do. I have lost a couple of good fish because of line management issues in the last year or two. Life is too short to risk losing the fish of a lifetime in an attempt to save a couple of bucks.

Birds nest won't normally damage your line unless the line gets under your spool or if your line kinks. Check for weak spots and retie if you find anything that you think might be a weak spot.

You'll be able to tell.  If the line looks like it just has came up off of the spool a little then that's not too bad.  If you have kinks and knots, that another issue.

I think birds nests with fluorocarbon are a whole nother ballgame!    If you accidentally kink or scratch a 4-8# fluoro, there is definitely going to be a weak spot.

And don't do what I did, try throwing a baitcaster into 30+ mph wind.  Worst birds nest I have ever done yesterday.  I was stubborn, got away with it a few times before and pushed my luck way too much. 

 

I agree that it depends on how badly you kink your line that degrades the strength of your line, not simple overruns or anything that is easily fixable with your thumb.

Braid not a problem. mono depending on the size and brand it should be fine, but it is cheap enough to replace that I would suggest after a monster backlash just cut and redo. floro, hmm...  dont backlash floro that is the best advice I can give.

I wasn't casting into the wind, but I gave the old heave-ho with a TD-Z 105H and 6 lb. mono with zero brakes and no spool tension. (And no thumb.)  This probably will be the second time I have ever had to cut line and re-spool.

Yeah it was my 2nd time too, it was really bad...I had to even go down all the way to my backing mono line.  Mine was 8lb P-Line Floroclear with 6lb line mono backing.  I had to make many cuts to the line, it was dreadful, worst ever!  Silly me thinking I'm so good I can cast into heavy winds.

You didn't mention what reel you were using.  Some are more forgiving than others.  My Curado 51E does quite well.  My Black Max 1600C round reel does great.  I can do reasonably well with my Zillion and Fuegos as long as I don't try to go too light.  Give me a reel with a faster spool, and I am in trouble.  Examples are an Alphas ito and Sols.  I imagine my Purple Alphas, 103HL Type R and 105H will also fall into this category.

It was my Curado 50E, I don't normally have issues with backlash on it, it was my favorite reel to use last season.  First backlash I had on that one too, I think I chucked it too hard into the wind as my casts before that was manageable.  Just got over eager trying to hit a spot.

You are either far better than me, or much more patient! I don't know how many times i have cut line off a reel, but it is way north of 2...I usually catch something in the boat, like the console, motor, another rod, light, etc, etc. etc...I don't even bother messing with them-I just cut and re-spool.
