Super User clayton86 Posted May 9, 2013 Super User Posted May 9, 2013 When I found out my first child was going to be a boy I went out and bought a Sig P220 Equinox for him before he was even born. Now he has that and a .22 revolver waiting for him in the gun safe for when he's old enough (he's 4 now). Right now my kids know that guns a boo-boo and not to be touched (of course none are laying around for them to!!!) but still when I handle them I always explain those are adult things. What I figured would help would be to ease their curiosity, so one time I let my son touch and handle some of my pistols and shotguns. he was bored of it after 5 minutes and never asked to see them again :-) in few years we'll be shooting buddies. oh, and noone in my family would dare to say a word, plus they are all gun owners or approve and are envious of my collection anyways ;-) That's awesome I did the same with my sons 22 rifle it was his before he was born but now I have two sons youngest don't have one yet. Awesome your family is supportive also mine is also fr the most part my dad and uncle are very anti gun so they just get ignored. Quote
deputybc Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 My kids have been shooting guns since they were 3yrs old with me supervising. I believe if you teach the kids the right way to handle the guns they will grow into responsible shooters. My kids are living proof of this now that they are 17 and 15. God help somebody if they break into my house while im at work, they will put 2 in the chest and 1 in the head. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted September 26, 2013 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted September 26, 2013 I was raised with a gun case in the hallway right outside my bedroom door. I was taught how to use and care for them and to leave them alone until it was time to use one. That is how I raised my two and they can both shoot well and have a healthy respect for fire arms. This was one of the many battles I fought with my EX inlaws. Stand up for what you believe no matter who says anything. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted September 26, 2013 Super User Posted September 26, 2013 Early this Spring I took my 5 year old son for his first trip to the shooting range. We set up at the end bench with the single shot .22 that I learned on and both of his older brothers started with. We were plinking away, not really paying attention to what was going on two benches down. Then during a ceasefire one of the guys tapped me on the shoulder and started to ask me questions about my thoughts on guns, teaching techniques for my boy and so on. I asked who he was and was amazed that he was a known anti-gun reporter for a local newspaper. One of the local gun shop owners had invited him to the range for a little gun education. The reporter was able to shoot many different guns for the first time that day. I was also very excited to talk to him about how I raise my kids to respect guns and by shooting with them I'm able to teach them how destructive guns can be when used wrong. We talked about being a responsible gun owning parent and safety in the home. I never got to see if he wrote an article about it but I hope his eyes were opened a little bit that day. 1 Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted September 26, 2013 Author Super User Posted September 26, 2013 He's getting the rifle for Christmas. He's been so wound up about shooting bows with me that he has forgotten about it now. He's getting said rifle and thats all there is to it. My inlaws can shove off for all I care. Except for my grandaddy in law, he learned to shoot at the age of four. Says he could drill the cap off a snuff can from 50 yards back then. Anyway, he is our boy to raise and thats what we are doing. Thanks for the support everyone. Quote

Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted February 6, 2014 Author Super User Posted February 6, 2014 Couldn't agree more. I'm going to go against the prevailing winds here and say that 5 is too young for anything more lethal than a butter knife. Still ain't gotten around to buying the dang thing yet. He now has a thick plastic blunted round point. Combat training knife. As well as bow. He wasn't a fan of his one shot with my .22 revolver. Said it was too loud. So we are gonna wait a few more years. Quote
Brian Needham Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 yeah 5 could be young, but it could be the right age too. when our grandparents were 5 they were feild dressing deer...... just because the so called elites of society has changed doent mean society as a whole has changed. and for the most part if you werent born and raised down south then you probably just dont understand. That doesnt make us stupid, uneducated, or backwards, it just means we leave the world's BS where it belongs. 1 Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted February 6, 2014 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted February 6, 2014 I am stupid, unedjumacated, backwards and from the south. I learned to shoot and hunt around the age of 5 and so did my children. My philosophy is this. I don't tell you how raise your fat, video game playing, disrespectful, non motivated little snot nosed brats. Don't tell me how to raise mine. 3 Quote
