Under the Radar Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Can't remember which of the Bass Pros on Vs a year or so ago gave your answer.MORE BLOOP = your knot tied in the middle or top of the eye. Less bloop more spit = knot at the bottom of the eye. a drop of super glue helps keep the knot in place. "That's all I have to say about that" Forest Gump That can also be influenced by rod angle. That's true Burley, but on a looong cast the line weight/ surface tension negates the rod tip position. But on shorter casts the line tie plus the rod position can give a fella a lot of options. cufishin Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 The advice given on "how" to make it bloop better is spot on.However if your looking for a different brand that excels in blooping or chugging then look at which ones have a deeper more concave cup on the front. For example the zell pop or the rico have a flat face with a lip on top. This causes the sound to be more subtle and makes them spit better. The rebel pop-r is right in between. You sort of get the best of both worlds. You can make it do everything. That said some good bloopers for me are Heddon Poppin Image(my favorite),Heddon Lucky 13,Hula Popper,River2Sea Bubble Popper. Yup. This is the first bait that came to mind when I read the title of this thread. The Secret Weapon pattern is pretty cool. X3 I have had really good luck with the Poppin Image, got a lot of good bass on the baby bass pattern, even had a Muskie hit it once, he must have liked it too because he kept the popper. Quote
repper Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 i was told years ago, when in the back seat of a pro's boat, that the popper is supposed to spit tiny drops of water, which is what bait fish do when they are near or at the surface. and if you pay close attention you will see shad dong this exact thing. i was told not to make it bloop, but rather make it spit so that's what i've tried to make it do over the years, and i've had pretty darn good success fishing poppers this way. maybe I'll try blooping em this weekend though, and see what happens Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted May 20, 2010 Super User Posted May 20, 2010 A popper worked slow with a louder bloop can potentially draw a bass out of heavy cover or attact them during low light or dirtier water situations. Quote
Primus Posted May 21, 2010 Author Posted May 21, 2010 i was told years ago, when in the back seat of a pro's boat, that the popper is supposed to spit tiny drops of water, which is what bait fish do when they are near or at the surface. and if you pay close attention you will see shad dong this exact thing. i was told not to make it bloop, but rather make it spit so that's what i've tried to make it do over the years, and i've had pretty darn good success fishing poppers this way. maybe I'll try blooping em this weekend though, and see what happens I do very well with this retrieve and I tend to fish my poppers fairly quick with spraying and skittering 2 or 3' feet and then a brief pause or sometimes I walk it at a moderate pace. That said and the reason I started this post is there are times when a very slow retrieve, that it is a pop or bloop and then pausing it for a few seconds will do better in certain situations such as inactive fish holding tight to cover like boat docks. The slow blooping presentation is one that I wouldn't use very often as I tend to fish generally at a quick pace for the clear water lakes that are abundant in my area, that said I want to have the option of fishing slow with the bloop sound if that's what the fish prefer that day. Today I went out and bought a Baby Lucky 13, Pop n' Image Jr. 3/8 oz White bellied Hula Popper as these are some of the baits that's been suggested so far. I do have a Black Hula Popper that I haven't used in years as I have prefered the Jitterbug for night fishing, that said maybe it's time after I upgrade the hooks that I get reaquainted with this bait. I appreciate the suggestions so far and I will be testing these baits this summer to see which one I like best for this presentation, Thanks guys it's been fun reading your responses. Quote
Blue Streak Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 I fish poppers a lot and it seems I never have it figured out. Everytime I go out it is different. What worked yesterday does not work today. I just vary my retrieve until I get a hit and hope that fish told me the secret. Quote
BassThumb Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 A popper fished on fluorocarbon line will give you a loud "bloop." The fluoro sinks and the popper dives a bit when twitched, tossing a lot of water and making a different noise than if it were fished on a floating line, like mono. Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 21, 2010 Super User Posted May 21, 2010 I prefer large size baits Rattlin' Chug Bug Madflash: model # CBM11 length 4 3/8 " Rebel Super Pop-R (Extra Large Size): model # P66 length 3 1/8" Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted May 22, 2010 Super User Posted May 22, 2010 Skitterpops can make anything from a tiny little blip to a big, splurping bloop. The Pop'n Image is another good blooper. Quote
