How Many Fish?

How many fish do you catch on a bait before it gets lost, broken, or retired?  I have heard of spinnerbaits breaking after 10 fish, but I have never had one break.  If a wire bait was to break, how many fish would you have to catch on it to make it worth while? 10, 30, 50?

Not sure how a spinnerbait would break from fish, of course they can bend out of shape.  I've caught pike on mine and never had an issue of a Spinnerbait being unusable, of course I guess you can have the skirt be damaged, but that is an easy cheap fix.  In fact I haven't had to throw any of my hardbaits from 15 years ago even from saltwater fishing, even with rusting and a lot of the paint/design is chipped away...it still catches fish.

A lure has to catch only one fish to make it worthwhile.  Prior to that, it's still a free-loader.  This year I've made it my goal to fish with and catch fish on lures that get neglected.

 

I've had countless hooks rust off baits and I've broken my share of lips on rocks.  Some have paint chipped off so bad their original color scheme is undiscernable.  I've even lost a few pricey crankbaits on the very first cast.  But it's all in the name of fishing so it's all good.

Certain wire for spinnerbaits gets fatigued, I am thinking if I remember correctly it is piano wire, I have had several break on me in testing, sometimes after only a couple fish

The titanium spinnerbait wires will break with use since the properties of titanium are destroyed when heated to get the "R" bend shape for the line tie. That could happen with zero fish caught or dozens.

I quit using that type, had to send too many back for replacement with the same results.

I usually snag them and break them off before they wear out and break.

That is good to know, didn't know that was common.  I use to buy Titanium version before, but for some reason I like the steel version better.  I seemed to catch more fish with them than the Titanium, could be just a coincidence/confidence now.

This is three of them that I had hanging in my garage. I got fed up sending them back for replacement.

 

Note: all break at the same place where a sharp 90 degree bend is done for the blade wire. Titanium gets brittle when heated and bent in that shape.

I've got a Lucky Craft Pointer that I've caught hundreds of fish on. I've had to replace the hooks because they break off after removing them from the lips of so many bass. It only took a few days of pre-spawn fishing to get them all.

I haven't lost one yet by a pike, but I find it ironic when I do decide go after pike I won't catch them, but catch my fair share when I go after bass.

I break more from bending the frames back in tune after catching fish. I suppose something like 4-5 a year I will actually break. Otherwise what happens is the skirt gets shredded or the pain comes completely off the head.
