How Much Has Your Boat Cost?

What type of boat do you have and how much did it cost you? Was it paid in full or paid off by a loan etc? Besides sticker cost how much have you sunk in your boat with repairs etc?  How much have you sunk with upgrades? Yeah I know money is a personal thing but I just want to see how much people have sunk in new vs old boats. I know my friend has already sunk $10,000 plus into his boat and hes only had it for about 4 years.

Idk if you want answers from just new boat owners but here goes. I have an 02 Nitro NX 896 with a 200hp Merc and tandem trailer. Bought it used in mint condition with a custom Nitro cover from original owner for $7500 paid in full. Repairs so far have been just a few hundred in maintenance luckily (knock on wood). Upgrades are another story all together. I have somewhere around $8,000 sunk in that already! Hydraulic jackplate, dual power pole set up, keel shield, radio system, Lowrance DSI units, all new optima batteries, new prop and some better outboard decals. Probably forgetting some stuff too. Worth it to me though.....

bought  new boat in 06, traded it last fall. Probably had total of $2500 in repairs and upgrades. New boat I have had 4 mths, already have over $4000 in upgrades. I sure hope this not a trend for the future!

02 g3 175 with yamaha 50. $4k cash. bought needing new carpet and was a panfisher model. spent $700 making it a bass boat(adding decks and bass sized livewell), recarpeting, and  aluminum floor

 

maintenance: bottom end oils and a set of plugs or 2.

 

upgrades: $300 in batteries to up grade to a 24v tm i already had.

               $250 blue water L.E.D.kit for boat and trailer.

               $60 rewiring trailer and L.E.D. caps for home made guide post

I bought a 1986 Fisher SV2 (kind of a multi-species boat) as a project. It had a sound hull, was made of 100% aluminum (back before Fisher was bought by BPS and they started putting wood in them), and had a clean running Merc 50. I paid $1600 for boat/motor/trailer. I paid a really good mechanic to go all the way through the engine and make sure everything was running tip-top, and I got lucky, the motor was in great shape and I only ended up spending about $250 for the tune up and a few minor repairs. It starts turn-key, even cold. 

 

The thing had 3 layers of crap carpet in it, so I stripped all the innerds out of the boat except the supports, stripped all the old adhesive and carpet off, and am in the process of replacing it with Nautolex marine vinyl. That process cost my dozens of hours, 2 bottles of nice bourbon for friends who helped, and about $225. I purchased 2 used Lowrance LCX color graph/gps units for $450, a Maxxum 55 for $200, and an Endura 50 for $100. I build an extended deck that added much needed storage and 14 sq. ft. of deck space for about $150 out of scrap aluminum building materials from my neighbor (who is a window contractor) and stainless hardware from Ace. Then I added 2 tempress stand up seats and fixed height pedestals, and replaced the livewell pump. I bought a spare tire and some other safety stuff/accessories for the boat. It looks beautiful now and all together, I've got $3000 in it and I feel like that was a steal considering how well set up it is and that it is set up exactly the way I like it for exactly the way I fish.

traded my snowmobile for my first bass boat. '86 16ft Lakeland 1672 pro console w/ a 60hp evinrude. I put over 3k in that boat.  Electronics, trolling motor re-decked and carpeted, reglassed most of the hull. Said and done it came near 5k.

2001 Crestliner Angler 16. about 4k new with trailer. paid Cash. Literally handed the salesman $100 bills. Nothing out of the ordinary as far as costs. repack the bearings every other year or so. Water pump now and then. Biggest cost if fuel. about 200 a year locally about $150 for the week I am in Canada. heck insurance in about $100 a year. I did have to replace the tilt assist cylinder twice in the last three years though.

In September of 2012 I bought a 1997 Nitro Savage 884 Dual Console with 2000 Mercury 150hp EFI. Motor had new Tempest prop. The boat had brand new carpet, 32 gallon livewell with oxygenator, new minnkota maxxum 70lb thrust trolling motor with spare prop, Hummingbird 586c depth finder. I paid 7,000 cash. It was worth every penny. Blue booked for around 9,000. Have not had to upgrade yet. Looking to put lowrance HDS 8 and 5 on though.

in march of 2012 I bought a 2000 Ranger R81VS for $10,000 total. That included 2 down imaging units and new vinyl for the seats and all the tax,title and license. As far as costs go, I upgraded my trolling motor rope. $50. Gas is my biggest cost.

I bought my 85 Fisher with 40hp merc for $1,200. That was with trailer and ready to fish. It's setup just like a bass tracker with decks and everything. Came with a #55 bow mount motor guide and cheap hummingbird fish finder. I'm at 2k with it now. Bought 3 new batteries and some extendable paddles. Boat and motor cover. 2 seat posts and 2 leaning posts. 2 rod racks. All things to winterize it. This also includes my tags and registration. For my 1st boat it's more then enough. I'd like to get one with more storage and a rod locker. Plus a larger front deck.

Bought my 2004 Tracker TV-18 w/ 150 Merc for $4,500.  I haven't kept track of the costs, but here is what I've done.

 

Replaced the carpet and all seats

Installed a six inch jack plate

Added a hot foot

Moved the trim controls to the steering column

Installed a Lowrance network, which displays water pressure, fuel level and fuel consumption on my depth finder.

Replaced the water pump and impeller on the Merc

Replaced the tilt/trim hydraulic pump seals

Installed LED lighting under all my deck lids

Installed a burglar alarm.  Any deck lid that is opened will set off the alarm.

Installed a Lowrance HDS-8 with side-scan on the console

Replaced  the Motor-Guide 45# cable-steer TM with a MinnKota wireless Terrova 90#  with iPilot

Installed a Dual-Pro three bank charger

Replaced all three batteries

Replaced the trailer tires

Installed LED lighting on the trailer

 

Other than the above, I haven't done much.  Other than the jack-plate and the trailer tires, I did all the work myself.  My best guess is that I spent an additional $5K over the purchase price of the boat/trailer.

I looked hard for a used SV2 in 2002 but none to be found around my area. They were a boat ahead of their time. Ended up with a new 2001 Fisher Marsh Hawk 165 with a 50hp Mercury. Its all aluminum no wood to rot and lap streak sides. I wouldn't sell it for what I paid for it in 2002. Spent very little on repairs. Upgraded the trolling motor for free, sold the used one for  what the new one cost. Replaced both depth finders for under $300, one was on sale one was new in the box at a resale shop. Had to buy 2 tires and one tail light. The tail light was taken out by a short steel pole in tall grass when I parked where the resort owner asked me to park it,

It ran, just not very good, I tested compression before I bought it, it was low on all cylinders but that was due to a massive carbon issue that I had noticed when I looked in the cylinders, the power pack was the big issue, it was down 2 cylinders.

 

The original asking price was 1800 bucks but it had not been taken care of very well, when I first saw the boat it was black with dirt, it was left uncovered for over 2 years sitting along side of a gravel road.

 

It needed so much cleaning and the trailer was painted black to hide the rust it had.

 

No, I never met the guy before that day, I saw the work it needed and I knew I would be close to what the boat was actually valued at in good condition with all of the work, I offered 500 and of course he declined, but the guy was really cool about it and we still stay in touch actually, but long story short I left him my cell number just incase I had not found the boat I was really looking for and he decides to sell it for my offer.

 

He called back about a month later and he told me he would sell me the boat for what I was offering under one condition, so an added case of Bud was thrown in as well, guess I should have put that in the original cost too lol !

I just bought $70 worth of new fuel line this morning, add that to my total. I still need to add a leaner seat as well. The more I get this boat the way it should be the more the thought of selling it leaves my mind. I just wish I had a little more power so maybe a repower will happen instead of a sale. I dont think I could ever get the price I would expect out of it. As it stands today I wouldnt be able to let it go for less than $5500 and its a 92, simply not gonna happen.

If my dad taught me one thing it was to always have a fridge stocked with beer and an extra case sitting around. So many of life's problems can be solved with a case of beer.  My friend has had his trailer for his race car repaired for a case of beer and even borrowed an engine lift for one.
