Ultimately the only way to get noticed is either be a successful guide or win tournaments. Other than that maybe work in a tackle shop and attend events volunteering etc....

I suggest that you go to the top of this board and read the Rules and FAQs.  The FAQ's provide tons of information on this topic.

Hi James, and welcome to the forum. I just want to give you kudos on your direction of study. Marine biology is a great field, maybe not a big-money field, but rewarding in so many ways. Good on ya, lad.

Ok NC Bassin, you aske dfor it and here it is.

This applies to you playing sports, your social life and your work ethic.

The following is from Justin Verlander's parents about why Justin stood out at the baseball camps and while growing up.

SO HOW DOES A KID GET NOTICED?

Arriving early and leaving late

Being a good sport and a good teammate

Being sincere

Being humble

Hustling

Cleaning up around the dock, the boat, a baseball dugout, a football field when no one is watching or being asked

By making eye contact - look the person directly in their eyes

By listening

Having your hat on straight and yoru pants pulled up

By saying "thank you"

By addressing older folks with a "Yes Sir and Yes Mam and Yes Coach"

By being gracious at all times, even when you lose

By wearing clean and pressed clothes and looking like a winner

By complimenting others even when they screw up or don't do well

By encoraging others when they are in a slump or do something wrong

By being a leader

By NOT following the crowd

By thinking for yourself

By doing more than is required

By having a firm handshake

By standing straight and tall

By being in good health and not overweight and sloppy

It does not matter if you are in the right place at the right time if you don't stand out.

And you stand out by being special.

It also helps to win a few tournaments.

Just a few suggstions from the parents of the Cy Young winner.

Get noticed?

First and foremost, follow Sam's advice.

Second, GET OUT THERE. Join a bass club. I would suggest go in as a co angler, keep your mouth shut and absorb all the info you can from older, wiser anglers.

Fish as often as you can. Did Michael Jordan become great by never practicing?

Experiemnt different techniques when you are out pond hopping or have some fun fishing time.

Visit your local tackle shops, dont just buy your stuff and leave, buy a coke or a cup of coffee and listen to the older guys, ask questions but dont reveal secrets learn by others unless they say its ok.

If you do this locally for long enough, you will be recognized as an avid local angler. In a bass club, you will be competeing against guys from all over your region and will make alot of contacts. Dont be affraid to write their phone numbers down and keepnin touch about different bodys of water and fishing.

Like a said in line one, fish as often as you can and save your money to pay entry fees so that you can fish competetivly often.

But just remember as you get out there making yourself seen to other anglers and guys in the tackle shop and tackle salesman to always present yourself as a good young man. Do not be arrogant but eager to learn. Do not be boastful, but humble.

I hope this helps man. My best answer is GET OUT THERE.

Lots of great posts here the vast majority of which I agree with 100%.

Guys I know that have made it on the regional tours here in Texas are all great people to talk to ... Really engaging. Plus they show very well on the leader boards. From there the rest seems to follow.

Good Luck

Be sociable, be curious, fish some tournaments, love to fish. Be respectful to EVERYONE. You'll get what you give. Don't expect any notoriety whatsoever. Last but not least, never tell anyone how good you believe you are. Let your actions and your results speak for themselves.
