LApanic Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 I still practice flipping/pitching on a bucket in the backyard when I can't fish. What other techniques do you practice and how do you do it? Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted April 23, 2013 Super User Posted April 23, 2013 I Iook at terrain and think about what it would look like submerged. I imagine what it would look like on sonar. Then where fish might hold in diff conditions. I do this while driving usually. The only casting I practice is fly-casting. I use a yarn rod in the house too. Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 23, 2013 Super User Posted April 23, 2013 Try to continue to practice underhand roll cast and also casting for accuracy in my field. Quote

Brian6428 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 I also practice flipping in my basement. I set up a target and hit it from as far away as i can. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted April 24, 2013 Super User Posted April 24, 2013 I do map study and read alot (this site, books, magazines). Believe it or not I also spend some time visualizing some of the spots I fish and imagine fishing them with particular lures. A little trick I learned from my golf lessons. Quote
Highhawk1948 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 I study old maps and logs of the lakes i fish from the 80s and 90s when I kept records of all my trips. Stay in touch with a couple of guys who fish the same lakes. Once a week while I am waiting for one thing or another I will get a rod out of my rod locker and pitch and cast to small targets under my oak trees. While on the lakes i am constantly watching my electronics and observing cover/structure. 1 Quote
bassguytom Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 I practice keeping my wife happy so I can get out fishing again. Lifes a chess game and I'm Bobby Fisher! Quote

Being a golfer, I can see how that would be beneficial 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 24, 2013 Global Moderator Posted April 24, 2013 Google maps and searches for info. I practice roll casts and pitching with a short rod in the living room with a knotted piece of rope. My puppy enjoys that game probably more than I do. Actually I live less than 15 minutes from a handful of decent lakes so if I have time to practice at home I have time to do the real thing. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 24, 2013 Super User Posted April 24, 2013 I don't practice. The similarity between golf and fishing is being in shape, you won't be much of a golfer over 18 holes if your golfing muscles aren't in condition, weak legs and core muscles. I fish 7 days a week, most my fishing is not using feather lite gear, I can fish for hours and not get tired or sore, I could not do this if I were out of shape. With the exception of fishing offshore once a week (standing the entire time on a center console boat), I'm walking beaches, sea walls, fresh water canals. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted April 24, 2013 Super User Posted April 24, 2013 Like others, I practice flipping and pitching in my back yard. I also do the visualization thing especially since free time for practice is not widely available. Additionally, I make practice casts using my neighbor's windows as targets. Quote

Super User lmbfisherman Posted April 24, 2013 Super User Posted April 24, 2013 x2 - Last year was my first full season and noticed how tired I'd be after being out on the water for half the day. So during the off season I started a cardio and strength training...I run 3 days a week up to 45 minutes now (goal is 1 hour jog/runs) and 3 days a week walking for 20 minutes in between the runs. 3 times a week I work on core muscles (crunches), push ups, curls and work on my shoulder and triceps. This should also make it easier to unload/load my canoe off my minivan, as I struggled sometimes at the end of the day,. Not to mention it is best for me and my overall health. When I have time I practice flipping and pitching in my yard, study maps and try to identify where fish may hold, read the boards, watch the WFN and cuddle with my rods and reels..oh I mean with my wife. I don't practice. The similarity between golf and fishing is being in shape, you won't be much of a golfer over 18 holes if your golfing muscles aren't in condition, weak legs and core muscles.
