I have always been a worm t-rig fisherman my whole life, I have always been really successful fishing that technique too. But now I have been getting into more cranking, and spinnerbaits etc... over the last few years.

I have read tons of posts on here about guys doing well on jigs. I have no earthly idea how to fish a jig. I have done a lot of reading on whats good trailers and what to throw to cover. But what do I really need to know about jig fishing.

What do I need to look for in a jig?

What Colors when?

What to do once it hits bottom? (I have seen in videos that 7/10 times the bites are on the fall)

What weight for what situations?

Thanks Guys, I been using a pro model jig by SK and had a few hits but not much.

As far as color like other baits it depends on the weather and the water clarity. When it is sunny out and the water is clear go with a natural brown or green. My favorite is green pumpkin with an Alabama craw color paca chunk. When it is overcast or murky waters I like to either go with a brown with bright orange in it as well as black and blue or just all black.

The action all depends on the water temp. When it is colder finesse is what its all about. Soak that bait and let it sit and gently hop and drag it off the bottom. When the temp is a little warmer and the fish are active give that bait a little more life.

Hope this helps. I'm sure the article had everything I mentioned.

BTW the pro model jig is a good one  ;)

K.I.S.S.

Instead of concentrating on the wide menagerie of jigs concentrate instead on locations and feeling the bite. Once you have established these two then and only then move on to refining your own personal repertoire of complication.

My advice to anglers new at jig fishing but are proficient at the Texas Rig is to fish the jig in the exact same way varying the speed of retrieval.

1/4 oz Black-N-Blue is the best place to start followed by a Green Pumpkin ;)

Any Black/Blue Jig

1/4oz to 3/4oz

All I do is bounce it let it sit, bounce it let it sit, drag it let it sit, drag it let it sit.

I caught a 7lbs Largemouth and all I did was literally bounce it twice and let it sit there for about 3 minutes with her staring at it.

Give these jigs a try http://www.blackwaterjigs.com

They come with rattles, a trailer, 60 strand skirt. They are pretty good.

Here is a picture of one that I use. Its actually the jig that caught the 7 lbs Largemouth. I like ordering online because you dont have to pay tax.

I am also just getting into jig fishing this year.  Every year i try to learn something new and this year it's fishing the jig.  I've been practicing my flippin in the back yard and now i'm ready for the bass season to open up and to start landing the lunkers.

i too have recently started jig fishing in earnest. and i have to agree with the advice above.

get a 1/2oz jig in black and blue and fish it almost identical as you would a t-rigged craw. this is the easiest way to start. im still in that phase but im starting to think more towards "jig" techniques more than t-rig now that ive caught a few fish and have a feel and confidence for it.

if I am only fishing in 8-10ft of water should I still be fishing 1/2oz? I am fishing a lot of man made structure in open water and not a lot of timber. But I am in the process of dropping bundles of structure this week woot.gif

I have been fishing this jig 1/2 tightline with a paca chunk/paca chunk senior in greenpumpkin and the fish have just been absolutely hammering these things around here.

Only thing i hate about jig is i tend to lose a lot of them/ more then any other bait.

as far as color throw anything as long as its black haha not really but its always my starting point if im in clear water ill throw a watermelon color of some sort stained water ill go with darker colors. also goto tackle warehouse they have a huge selection of jigs but grab 1 or 2 of different brands and try em out  you might find you like one brand more than other for certain situations

Thanks Guys, I been using a pro model jig by SK and had a few hits but not much.

What do I need to look for in a jig?: Football head jigs really excel in rocky structure environments, Bullet head casting in grassy structure and arky style in heavy structure. These are not "set in stone" but a good base to start with. I personally don't mind using an arky head fan casting in grass or hopping one on rocks.

What Colors when?: Black and blue is a good all around color to start with and in all conditions. My go to is watermellon candy/black. If the water is really clear I switch to smoke or bluegill colors and black with chartrueuce in murky water.

What to do once it hits bottom? (I have seen in videos that 7/10 times the bites are on the fall): Loaded question. All I can say is experiment. Sometimes a lift drop retrieve and then fine tune the tempo. In colder water S L O W and I would drag instead of hopping. Sometimes you could swim it like a slow-rolled spinnerbait.

What weight for what situations?: Just enough so that you can still feel bottom contact. If flipping and pitching, heavy enough to penetrate the cover.

All above is based on my experience and is MHO. The articles on this site are exceptional and very useful. I actually found this site while doing a search on this very topic. I also found a good source of info on Denny Brauer's site: www.brauerbass.com. He has a lot of articles for all types of situations on this topic.

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't drop timber until the end of June. Especially if its a pond that you have made. If its a local lake that you frequent these areas alot you might ruin the bite for a while so wait until they move a little deeper.

Of course I fish Alan Henry so everything is late here. They might already be deeper where you are at.

Just my 2 cents. I stocked a pond one year then structured it the next year to early and didn't get near as many bites as I did before I structured it.

Its kind of like throwing a deer blind up 30 minutes before you hunt an area. The deer just wont come in.

Jigs are great baits with their time and place.  However, don't try to replace your texas rigs.  Its pretty easy to get caught up in using them too much.  In most tournaments I fish these days, my  lakes are getting hammered by guys chucking black and blue jigs at the bank all day.  Its all they want to do regardless of the situation.  I just go behind them throwing any type of tube or worm in something other than black and blue and usually come out on top of them.   Its a common weekend angler / bank beater mentality these days to chunk and wind a jig.  Many times not throwing one is your best bet.   I've never heard a good angler say "Man, I wish my bait and presentation were more like everyone else's!"

Now I'm not saying they arn't useful, they are.  I've caught many of fish on jigs, and they especially have a knack at catching bigger fish.  Just telling you to not get toooo caught up in the hype, they arn't a cure-all.

I've started putting together my own jigs now, but if I had to recommend something to start with I would go with a BooYa jig, maybe something like 1/4 or 3/8 oz.  Don't get complicated on  your colors.  Either dark like black or natural colored.  Paca chunks seem to be the best bang for the buck as trailers are concerned, but anything works really.

First of all I want your job!! also orders are orders, lol.

I doubt you would do it to your own lake/pond though right?? lol

Just wondering if it was my mistake luck the last time or if my results were common.

well we caught fish on the structure/brush we put out in 24hours. We catch fish on the stuff we put out within a couple days. May have been certain situations that made you have bad luck donno
