Craiger12 Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 Title pretty much says it all. I'm seriously considering jumping onboard and I have a rod/reel combo that can do it, but I'm debating whether to use braid or heavy copoly. I'm thinking either 50# braid or 17-20# CXX. Opinions? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 23, 2013 Super User Posted April 23, 2013 I think most people use braided line, but it is NOT required, especially for lighter rigs. A prime reason for heavy braid is retrieving The Rig when it is hung. The Bass Pro style retriever fits right ove the top, so your success rate approaches 100%. Quote
KevO Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 No, I've thrown TN rig on 20# FC just fine. I've thrown the A-rig on it to but I would go up to 25 for that. I use braid most of the time though, and light wire hooks help get the rig back when you get snagged too! Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 I was watchin the guys in FLW and a lot were using heavy FC. One of them said he believes he gets more bites than when he uses braid. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 23, 2013 Super User Posted April 23, 2013 I use braid (65 lb Suffix, I think, can't remember) primarily because I don't want to lose the whole rig when I get stuck. I'm not really worried about the line visibility issue, because I don't think of the A-rig as a stealth type approach. As an added precaution against getting hung up and losing the whole rig, I use split rings between the snap and the jig head. The idea being that should I get it really stuck, I pull real hard and the split ring should bend and seperate before the 65 lb line breaks. 1 Quote
Craiger12 Posted April 23, 2013 Author Posted April 23, 2013 Thanks for the insight guys. I'm planning on picking up the Picasso School E Rig in full size and Jr size. What hooks do you guys recommend? Also, any specific swimbait recommendations? I'm partial to Keitech, but durability is a serious issue. Thanks in advance. Quote
Grantman83 Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 A cheaper option would be 25lb big game. Though if you get hung up it will be harder to retrieve. Quote

Shop around and try and find the manns rigs on sale for about $10 they are the best I have used so far. I really hate light wire a rigs because they break and dont stay spread (they act like a wet noodle with heavier jig heads). Also I wouldnt throw an a rig on anything but braid because I feel like they will break off easily. I fished behind a guy using FC on his a rig and caught more fish than him so I really dont think line visibility matters as much as the baits and retrieve do. I would go with 65lb braid because I have been able to bend even heavy wire hooks out of logs with it. If you are afraid of losing your a rigs go to ace hardware or home depot and but 3 feet of chain so big key rigs an carbiners and heavy rope. Works much better than a bps retriever because you can make it heavier and its cheaper. Quote
Craiger12 Posted April 24, 2013 Author Posted April 24, 2013 Thanks for the help guys. I decided to spool up with some 65# Fireline braid that I had left over from a while back. I also placed a TW order and decided to go with a Picasso School E and School E Jr to try out with some Keitech Swing Impact FATs in 3.8" and 4.8". One thing is for sure - this is going to become one expensive endeavor if I have a good weekend on the water. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 24, 2013 Global Moderator Posted April 24, 2013 I hate braid with A-rigs, if you backlash and you bait stops fast you'll get to watch the whole thing keep going and sink out of sight. I like copoly line from 20-30lb test for the shock absorbency and the abrasion resistance. I pour my own heads for them which is just a 1/8, 3/16, or 1/4 ounce swim jig head. They have a wide gap and the hooks are a little more stout than others but will still bend if you get snagged. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 24, 2013 Super User Posted April 24, 2013 Yum offers several options: http://www.lurenet.com/lures/baitschooltechnology?cn=WB103&att=WB103 I have been experimenting with light options. This is one that has been very effective: On the outer arms LFT Live Magic Shad rigged on 3/0 Gamakatsu Offset Worm Hooks, light wire. No weights. Center wire: Johnson Silver Minnow. Quote
PondBoss Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Braid is not mandatory, but recommended. Personally I wouldn't worry about line visibility. After all you are towing a yard rake through the water. lol 1 Quote
