Megastink Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 I'm not sure if this belongs here or in Tacklemaking, but here we go... I read that the Hack Attack Flipping Hook was a gamakatsu siwash hook with a black nickel finish. However, at almost $2 a hook, I started wondering if I could make one with thread, a paper clip, clippers and super glue and maybe epoxy. I want to darken the finish on the hook; take some of the shine out. How do I do that? I was thinking a blowtorch, but I'm nervous about ruining the metal strength. Thoughts??? Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 I would bend stainless music wire (springs back) and bend it as shown. Put it through hook eye and wrap with braid. Then epoxy the thread. You can get the wire from a hobby shop Quote

mnbassman23 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 I could be way off here, but in essence the first part of your question is asking how to make a bait keeper correct? If you want something similar to the Hack Attack keeper you can buy some heat shrink tubing. Cut it an inch long and cut one end at a 45 degree angle. Slide it up the the bend of the hook to the top shank and then heat it on until it cinches down good. I've done this to many of my straight shank hooks. It's much cheaper to buy the SS hooks without the keeper and heat shrink tubing is dirt cheap. If this is not what you were looking for, never mind my ramble 2 Quote
jhoffman Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 So that video clacker buzz got me dign on the net and I found out you can do the same thing in his video with a swivel. I dont wanna post a link on the open forum to another forum. If you need to see this contact me. Its exactly like the keeper shown above just a swivel! Quote
Megastink Posted April 24, 2013 Author Posted April 24, 2013 1) I want to know how to darken a silver (siwash) hook. 2) I can close the eye via epoxy or maybe soder. I'll figure that part out. Quote
cadman Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 1) I want to know how to darken a silver (siwash) hook. You can use black indelible marker which is the easiest, and can be reapplied many times, however it won't last long. You can also dip your hooks in flat black powder paint up to the bend. Don't cover the hook point. Bake your hook, and it will last almost forever. Just like powder painted jigs. If you put a trailer on it , you will never see the shiny nickle color ever. I have done this in the past and it works really well. Do not torch your hooks. #1 you will lose the original temper of the steel, and #2you will not get the plating black, but more of a blue brown.
