zwhiten12 Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 Hey y'all! My girlfriend likes to fish with me and up until now she has has been using one of my spinning reels. I am looking at getting her a fishing pole but I just don't know what to get her. I think she would be able to handle a baitcaster but she also isn't the most patient thing in the world an I don't want her frustrated and complaining while were trying to fish. I was just curious what some of y'all wives/girlfriends have if they even fish with y'all? Thanks y'all! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted April 22, 2013 Super User Posted April 22, 2013 That was way to many ya'alls for one post .....i would say if she likes and uses your spinning gear then get her a spinning set up of pretty much whatever she wants. My better half doesn't fish so i haven't had to worry about buying any rods yet and my checkbook is thanking me.... Quote

Man, if that was a lot of y'alls you should hear some of my friends, it's ridiculous! But yeah, im leaning towards a spinning set up cause if she's happy then I'm happy! Quote
Quitlimpin Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 My wife uses a Daiwa L&T spinning rod and a pro caster reel--with the all important hot pink reel grip. She's actually really good with it. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted April 22, 2013 Super User Posted April 22, 2013 My wife uses my Avid Spinning combo 6'6" MH/F for everything (one of my combos), I'd suggest you stick with a spinning combo. I'd buy a BC combo later down the road if she is ready to take the leap. (Let her practice on yours). I remember BPS having lady specific combos, take a look at the Lady Trion spinning combo, the model name eludes me at the moment. The spinning reel is a solid reel, (GX-7 I think it was, starting to remember). I'd get one of those for her use. Quote

Of course I have a thing for a Southern accent too, probably wouldn't be as cute if they didn't have one. Quote

Super User Felix77 Posted April 22, 2013 Super User Posted April 22, 2013 Stick with spinning. If she becomes seriously interested in the sport then she will slowly take away your rod/reels. Quote
zwhiten12 Posted April 22, 2013 Author Posted April 22, 2013 i would get something you really want in a BC combo, then if/when she gets fed up with it you got yourself a new setup, too easy!! then get her the spinning outfit afterwards...its a win win situation lol. That's a great idea! With my luck though she would fall in love with it and I would be jealous! Quote
zwhiten12 Posted April 22, 2013 Author Posted April 22, 2013 Stick with spinning. If she becomes seriously interested in the sport then she will slowly take away your rod/reels.. Man.... She's already taking all my lures, I'll reach into my tackle box to get one and I look up and she's over the casting it. She tends to stick to bright colors because I guess she likes shiny things and because they're "pretty." Quote
MyKeyBe Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 My wife loves to fish but that's also exactly what she does. Fish. She really doesn't care what she catches. Just a bobber or a sinker and some live bait. Rarely a lure but she has been known to use them. When we go out she uses my Spinning setup. $30.00 Abu reel, $40.00 Fenwick Venture, (I bought both on clearence and paid less than $40.00) and 20# Power Pro. She loves to use it. It's way more everything than she would ever want. Sensitive and light enough. Having said that if I was buying something just for her... It would be spinning because that's what she is used to and likes. It would not be pink unless I wanted punched in the face. It would be simple but effective. Decent rod and reel around $80.00 or less for both. Look for sales. K.I.S.S. Quote
mark nowak Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 here is my piece of advice for you it is best if you let her pick out her own rod a reel...make recommendations about the length and action but let her make the decision in the end. Take here to BPS and let her see which one are the most comfortable for her. I am sure I have avoided catching a lot of heck by doing this, it seems like everytime my wife uses one of my setups something will go wrong with it and she will lose a fish and somehow its my fault. derekxec Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 if shes really into it you should also take her rod to a custom rod shop and put her name on it...then she will happy to use hers and leave yours alone hahaha 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 23, 2013 Super User Posted April 23, 2013 If I see my wife with a rod in her hand, I better run.................cause somebody's bout to get a beating. I don't take my girlfriend fishing, too many people know me on the lake. 2 Quote
Globadoc Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 I have to admit - I thought it was a choice when I first read the title: "wife, girlfriend, or fishing rod". Not sure which I'd choose, though. 1 Quote
CiMo Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 I'll stick with the popular response, you could get her a decent shimano sonora 2500 fb ( its a pretty orange pearl-ish color ) for about 50 $ maybe less and whatever rod tickles her pickle. Could get out spending around 80 $ ( less or more depending on sales and the rod she likes ). 1 Quote

Sodus Bay Scooter Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 Get her an awesome rod and reel and tell her it's one of the best you can get and then she'll be really happy to use it. And like the other guy said, if she doesn't use it then you have it all to yourself! 1 Quote
zwhiten12 Posted April 23, 2013 Author Posted April 23, 2013 I really appreciate all the help y'all! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 23, 2013 Global Moderator Posted April 23, 2013 I started my wife (then gf) off with a cheaper Okuma combo. It worked alright but it tangled a lot no matter what I did to keep it from doing it and she would get frustrated and stop fishing and then I'd get frustrated. A few years back I went out and popped for a St.Croix Avid Pearl and a Quantum Energy PT spinning reel. It's a super nice combo, more expensive and smoother than several of my own, and it makes her fishing much more hassle free. Since then she'll stay out longer and fish with me more often because she enjoys it more. Just a little something to think about. Quote
TNBassin' Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 The wife fishes Daiwa baitcaste reels. She has an older BPS Extreme reel she uses as well. Has them paired them up with 6'6 mh berkley rods and some 7'mh abu rods. No "fairy wands" for her. Quote
