Super User AK-Jax86 Posted April 22, 2013 Super User Posted April 22, 2013 I am new to the bait casting reel and I was wondering what type of rod I should purchase, looking for something relatively inexpensive but reliable at this point. When I feel more comfortable I will upgrade my rod. I have 2 brand new Abu Garcia reels one is the Revo STX and the other is Orra SX I need help setting the braking system etc, this is all foreign to me. Thanks for any input and help. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted April 22, 2013 Super User Posted April 22, 2013 Cheapest route is Berkley Lightning Shock, H20 Ethos and a few other house brands. Cabela's is having a sale on their Prodigy rods...$80 for a $100 rod. I've been told by a couple people here that they fish above their price point at full price. Picked up a couple for myself, but no chance to fish them yet. I would go with a 7' MHF personally, but a Medium Fast would work as well depending on cover and weight of lures, but then I don't have to tell you that. For a little more money, stop at your local Walmart and look at the Daiwa Jupiter. Of course once you get to the $100 range there are quite a few good options. Quote
jhoffman Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 define your price point. ive had house rods and of them all i only ever liked one and it was a fly rod. Quote

Super User lmbfisherman Posted April 22, 2013 Super User Posted April 22, 2013 These are first rods I used to get me to make the leap from Spinning to BC. - St. Croix Avid, Abu Garcia Veritas and Shimano Compre. The latter two can be found for 80-100. I bought my first Avid for 170 and the other I bought used at 100 a piece (also bought a spinning rod). So if you are patient you could probably find a deal on an Avid. I guess since you stated "inexpensive" I would pick a Compre or Veritas. These two rods are still in my arsenal after doing some upgrading during the winter, so they would still be useful even after you upgrade (compliment your arsenal down the road). I would also recommend getting a MH/F 7' for an all purpose stick. Quote
