joetomlee Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 If so, were you worried? I just went out fishing for the day and when I came back found a tick in my neck next to my adams apple. I got it out, but didn't save the tick to be tested. Not really worried because it has been in there less than a full day but don't know much about ticks either. I'm pretty sure it was a deer tick (based on google image searches). Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted April 19, 2013 Super User Posted April 19, 2013 If it wasn't dug in i woulnt worry too much. When i was a kid I've had quite a few from camping. Never got sick thankfully. d**n things are every where. Quote
joetomlee Posted April 19, 2013 Author Posted April 19, 2013 Yeah they are! It was almost all of the way inside! I've pulled them from animals before but never had one on myself until today. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted April 19, 2013 Super User Posted April 19, 2013 Deer ticks are super small and really hard to see unless they have already latched on and have a little blood in them but either way I wouldn't worry to much. I was fishing one time on a spring creek that ran through a field of waist high grass. I wasn't planning on fishing there but the smallie river I was going to hit was to high to wade. I was wearing shorts and as I was walking through I must have hit a nest or something because I pulled off no less than 40 of the little suckers and then another 5 when I got home and took a shower. Needless to say I never wear shorts out there anymore and I was just fine. Quote
RyneB Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 I have had dozens. We go up north everywhere for a week and I always get at least one. My buddy had one on his balls one time. He kept asking for help, he went at it solo. 1 Quote

Also as far as removing them goes I have found the best way to pull them out is to get a good grab at their head, pull slightly and twist. The shape of their jaws causes them to break free much easier than pulling straight back. Quote

Hanover_Yakker Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Yep and had the ill fated experience of full onset of Lymes Disease where my joints seized up while I was driving. I had to use my hands to push my leg down in order to brake. Not fun. Went through the full round of Doxycycline and now have a permanent marker for Lymes when my blood is drawn for my annual physical. It is no joke and should not be taken lightly. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted April 19, 2013 Super User Posted April 19, 2013 Yep. Had a bunch of em. Worst was on my inner thigh. Little buggers head broke off. Tried using a hypodermic needle to get it out. It was either that or a knife. It was not my most brilliant idea. Hurt like all hell. Ended up using a knife after digging for thirty minutes with that stupid needle. Still have the scar from cutting it out. To clarify. The needle was from one of my wife's unopened allergy syringes. At the time all I could find was that and a fixed blade knife. Quote
aceman387 Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 I fish from my kayak most of the time nowadays but still shore fish with some of my buddies at times.I have tried deep woods off and other sprays to keep ticks from crawling up me and the best thing i found was wearing long light colored pants so you can spot them crawling up you and applying a band of double faced tape (the thin kind that comes with those window hair dryer kits work well) put a band of it around your legs above your knee so the ticks get stuck on it crawling up you,i wish i had a magic bullet for taller thicker weeds and over hanging tree branches besides long sleeves and a hat but i don't. If you fish with a buddy check each others outer layers for crawling ticks before you climb into your vehicles because i have had ticks crawl on me days later while i am driving. Quote
DelfiBoyz_One_and_Only Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Let me start by saying my first fishing hole was a 20 minute walk through the woods and my second spot was a 35 minute walk through the woods. I was no stranger to finding ticks and removing them. HOWEVER, the last 3 years every tick that I have found in me has left a nasty spider bite type bump. I have even went to the doctor out of fear. The bump has lasted 3-4 weeks and was very itchy but no bulls eye rash noticed. I never in my life have had that type of reaction from a tick bite. A coworker of mine has had the same reaction to tick bites lately. Now I stay away from bank with grassy ,deer infested areas. The last thing I want is LYME disease. Â When in doubt get checked out! I'm pretty sure it was a deer tick (based on google image searches).  My mom and brother both have lyme disease from ticks, it is a pretty nasty disease. They both got a big red swollen bee sting like area. A simple blood test at the doc can tell you for sure if your worried. But my suggestion is not to wait too long if you feel you have symptoms. My brother waited a while, don't know if he didn't know or didn't have insurance, and it affected kidneys, fatigue and other health issues, it also keeps reaccuring with him. My mom took the anti-biotics and had been free and clear for a while. Use a bug spray with deet(sp?) from now on. Good luck  had that happen. fingernail clippers, chunk of skin, LOTS of blood.  Hmmm since we are on number 4, my wife wants a permanent solution. What's your rate? Do you take United Health Care? Super User deaknh03 Posted April 20, 2013 Super User Posted April 20, 2013 took my 6 yr old daughter to a quick job I had to do today, she played in the yard while I worked outside. We were there for 1 hour, I found 2 deer ticks crawling in her hair. After a full search, luckily that was it. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 20, 2013 Super User Posted April 20, 2013 Nope, but I have been bitten on the nipple by a ladybug..............yes they bite, no I didn't enjoy, and I really had no idea how it got down my shirt. Quote

ROFLMFAO!!!!!!!!! You may be the only person I know who has been bitten by a lady bug! How on earth did you manage that!?! Quote
Super User Darren. Posted April 20, 2013 Super User Posted April 20, 2013 Loads of ticks. We've got dogs, we've got 4 boys who love the outdoors and take the dogs with them. So ticks are a part of life here. One of my boys has a reaction to the tick bites, bee bites, etc., but nothing too severe. We've caught any lyme (target-like red rings) quickly and all treated with antibiotics, nothing severe so far. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 20, 2013 Global Moderator Posted April 20, 2013 I've had tons of them, had one dug in last week. A good pair of tweezers as close to the skin as you can get and slow steady pressure has always gotten them out for me. Don't burn them or try anything to get them to release because it will often make them release more junk into your body and increase the chances of you getting something. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted April 22, 2013 Super User Posted April 22, 2013 Over the years I have probably pulled dozens off that were dug in. Never had an issue. I usually wear shorts so I can feel they crawl up my legs, but those little seed ticks are a real problem around here. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 22, 2013 Global Moderator Posted April 22, 2013 Worst I had was walking out to check my trail camera in August last year. We had a really mild winter that didn't kill off any bugs so the ticks were terrible. First mistake I made was wearing shorts to walk out to check my cam. Normally wear rubber boots and sweat pants even though it's hot out just to prevent getting ticks. After I walked out my wife and I went to grab something to eat. I had that crawling feeling like something was on me but I thought it was just because of the feeling of the grass rubbing against my legs that made me think I had something crawling on me still but I couldn't see anything. After we were done eating I still felt like something was crawling on me and I got a flashlight out of my truck and looked closer. I had no less than 50 of what we call "seed ticks" crawling on my knees and legs. They were tiny ticks that must have just hatched because they were the size of a pinhead and I'd walked through a nest of them. I couldn't get home fast enough to shower off. Wore all my clothes into the shower and was probably in there for half an hour looking all over to make sure I got them all. After that I got back in my truck with a flashlight and found another dozen crawling around (thankfully I have a light grey seat cover). Amazingly I didn't have a single one attached to me but it took almost a week for me to loose the feeling that I had something crawling on my legs. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted April 22, 2013 Super User Posted April 22, 2013 Pulled a deer tick off the instep of my foot a couple years ago. Next day it started turning red. The following day it had doubled in size. Â I immediately went to the DR and he ordered a 28 day script for Doxycycline as a precautionary measure. PA/MD border is a hotbed for Lyme Disease. I didnt want to take any chances. Â I believe Hank Parker's kid has Lyme. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted April 22, 2013 Super User Posted April 22, 2013 wow. talk about horror stories.  The thought of getting one in my sac made me pucker.  Hell I'd get tested just to make sure. Quote
