lsufan334 Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Hey guys what is your favorite flipping hook? My buddy loves the Trokar but i just cant justify paying $2 for a hook. I will be flipping space monkeys, beavers, and brush hogs on 1/2 oz-1oz tungsten and 50lb braid. thanks for the input. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 7, 2010 Super User Posted May 7, 2010 I use a weedless hook as I flip and pitch in a lot of structure up here in Virginia. Eagle Claw has a larger eye but they tend to rust. Gammys have a small eye but do not rust. Mustad's are also OK once you understand how to set up the guards. I use a 1/0 or 2/0 and have been known to use a #1 at times. I would think that you should do well with any sharp hook as long as you bury the hook to make the bait weedless. In Mike the Tiger's Name I Remain, Sam Geaux Tigers! ;D ;D ;D P.S. I agree with you on the Tokar's. I lose too much tackle to pay that much for any hook no matter how good it is. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I picked up some Trokar's but haven't used them because I have had great preformance from the Youvella 4/0 flippin hook. My bite to hook up ratio is way better than I expected and I haven't lost a fish on that hook yet. I bought my buddy a pack or Trokars and it's all he's used this year and he loves them. His hook sets are BRUTAL and he hasn't bent or broken a Trokar yet. BTW, I didn't pay retail for the Trokars. We'll see. Quote

Big-O Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I'm still use the heavy wire Owner 5/0 Offset for flippin' most baits with great results. Big O www.ragetail.com Quote
fishinflip415 Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I only use paycheck baits punch hook. It's the same hook as the old reaction innovation BMF flippin hooks but the punch hook comes with heat shrink tubing to make a bait holder. It is key for keeping your bait straight on the hook. Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 8, 2010 Super User Posted May 8, 2010 Mustad Straight Shank Denny Brauer Flipping Hook for plastics up to the thickness of a 6" Gene Larew Salty Hawg Craw at which time I switch to a Strike King Saber Point Round Bend Offset. Quote

Texas10Man Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I like to put a heat shrink tube keeper on a Mustad Denny Brauer flippin hook. It works good for me Quote

lsufan334 Posted May 8, 2010 Author Posted May 8, 2010 Owner 3X punching hooks with the cutting point doesn't get much better Actually picked those up today to try out. 4/0 and 5/0. I am going to heat shrink a bait keeper. The barbs dont really hold the bait too well. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted May 9, 2010 Super User Posted May 9, 2010 Owner 3X punching hooks with the cutting point doesn't get much better X2 Little heat shrink tubing and voila. Great hook. I use those for almost all of my plastics now. Quote

I like the welded eye and don't want to go through the hassle of doing it my self. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Maybe Im just doing something way wrong, but I cant seem to keep the head of the plastic up on the hook with straight shank hooks, but I would love to fish them. Im using Owner 4/0 EWG. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted May 11, 2010 Super User Posted May 11, 2010 Add the piece of heat shrink tube to make a barb that holds the bait in place. Or you can use the toothpick method where you jam a toothpick through the hook eye while it's inside the lure. Clip it off and the bait won't move anywhere. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 I know I sound ignorant, but I dont even know what heat shrink tube is...so Im gonna try the toothpick idea!! SO simple, why didnt I think of that?? Quote
wackyworm66 Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Gamakatsu 3/0 to 5/0 depending on the bait I am flipping. Quote
