BassCats Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 What are your opinions of Okuma Baitcasting reels. They have been around awhile now and have continually improved their line up. I Have had the Citrix and the Cayennes(no longer sold) and loved them. Would really love to hear from some of you guys who do reel repair and have seen them after hard use. 1 Quote
mc6524 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 I have an older spinning reel and loved it. I then bought a newer one and it's not as smooth. IMO when it comes to bait cast reels, stay with the proven manufacturers and models. It gives you confidence that no matter what bait you're throwing you'll get the max distance and performance. nwmike Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 love okuma reels almost every reel I own is an okuma.they are reliable and an excellent value. Quote
Super User Teal Posted April 18, 2013 Super User Posted April 18, 2013 I have buddy that has komodos and the new helios and he loves them. You can also find them pretty cheap on e bay. Im pretty content with my reels, but i wouldnt be affraid to try one. Okuma seems like a good manufactuer that backs it product. If you search the threads, some respected fisherman on this site either own one or have used one and for the most part they say positive things. Quote
Grantman83 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Okuma seems to be making some strides in the freshwater market. Though I have read issues regarding the helios spinning reel, the baitcaster has gotten some good reviews. The serrano also gets alot of love and blew out at TW when they had a sale. Nothing wrong with trying something new, you might be pleasantly surprised. 1 Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted April 18, 2013 Super User Posted April 18, 2013 I have very limited use so far but fishing the Helios HS side by side a Core50 and Curado 50 its given no reason to make me feel like it was a poor purchase. Casting so far has been very good controlled and thats all Ive done with it no catches yet. Its on a Cumara 7'6" and throwing 5/16 Rippin' Raps with it easily. Even got a "Whoa thats far Dad" out of my son. Had KVD 1.0 sqbill as well no issues. Very good feature set and we have the great Scott Martin "pimping these reels" in his words BTW. So like those JD Powers initial quality rankings I would give it high marks but long term testing still needs to be performed to give it a recommendation. Here a few pics Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 I've worked on a few and they seem to be well built. They are competitive with other reels at similar price points. 1 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted April 18, 2013 Super User Posted April 18, 2013 I can't speak on their casting reels but I have 2 Okuma trio 30 spinning reels and have had them for a few years. I used them everytime I went fishing which was 4-5 days a week until I got into casting reels a year ago and they are still in the lineup. Never had a single issue and still smooth. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted April 18, 2013 Super User Posted April 18, 2013 Have been using an Okuma Komodo for the past year or so. Purchased the reel new for $145.00. As others have noted the reel is a solid buy for the money especially for what I paid for it. It has a host of nice features and has that sort of "blinged out" look to it. It is pretty lightweight for a reel in its price point has abec5 level bearings stock. Once dialed in the reel is a great caster. Mike, at DVT recently worked on it recently and I am anxiuos to try it out again! Quote
Koofy Smacker Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Ive got a Helios baitcaster. In terms of how much I like fishing with it, I like it more than my Curados. Durability is a future concern. Havent had it for long at all, but I really like what I see so far. Knobs are nice to the touch, and the thing is LIGHT. After I fished with some of Scotts in Florida I bought one and probably see more in the future if it holds up to my abuse. Quote
Jaheff Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 Bringing up an old thread to say I agree with what most have stated about the Komodo. Got mine for $113 to my door a couple months ago and am really Impressed with this real paired with a Phenix M1 MH. Quote
dam0007 Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 The Helios is one of the sexiest reels in my opinion. However had a saltwater reel from them back in the day and it fell apart. I forgot the model but it was the one they made to compete with the shimano bait runner. Since then it seems they've improved a lot! Quote
