Powell Diesel 705cb works great for cranks and jerkbaits.

For me personally, those are 2 different rods, I like a rod around 7' to 7'4" for cranks and a short 6'3"-6'10" for jerkbaits and topwaters. I also like a softer action for cranks than I do for jerkbaits and topwaters. I tried walking a spook with a cranking rod and it is hard to get used to it as you have to learn to use move the bait more to compensate for the rod bend, same thing for jerkbaits. I would look for something moderate fast so I don't have to much flex but some.

Do you need a reel as well? I would go with a Lew's Tournament Speed Spool in the 7.0 gear ratio. If you buy the rod from Gander Mountain tomorrow, you can get a St. Croix Avid with a $50 rebate, which would bring the rod to about $140ish. That would total around $290.

What power and action would you guys lean towards

I don't know anything about Dobyns, but I do have several Mojo's. If your looking to middle it and get one rod to do both, get the 7' M power fast action. If you want a dedicated set up for each, get the 6'6" M/F for the jerkbaits, and the 7' MH/M for crankbaits. I have both of those rods and am very pleased with them.

I have the 7' Mojo M /Mod rod for deep cranks and like it.

I just bought an Avid 7' MH cranking rod that should be here Thursday. I honestly don't think I've been this excited about buying something in my life. Well there was this M1A1 once, but for fishing I'm stoked.

I haven't found one person complain or have bad things to say about it.

I really like the Dobyns 704cb for jerlkbaits and smaller crankbaits. It makes a nice vision 110 rod and is a great wiggle wart and 1.5 rod. A deep little n is about all it can take . also a nice yellow magic or red fin rod.

I f you like a shorter rod , ( i do ) The denali Michael Murphy signature is nice .

The ultimate rod IMO for topwater, target cranking, and jerkbaits is the Dobyns 684CB. I prefer a smaller rod for these applications. Pair it up with a Lews and you're golden.

Powell 705CB rod with a Lews BB-1.  Right at $200 for the combo.  Maybe cheaper if you find a deal on the rod.  Reel is about $125 on ebay.  Rod $79 at Tw.

I'm almost of the same mind, except I have the Dobyns Champion 704CB GLASS model.  It will handle both jerkbaits and cranks well.  I especially like the way it "slingshots" a bait.  Loads up great!

Two different animals IMO. If your looking for a good rod to handle jerks to mid depth cranks I would suggest a Gen. 1 Cumara reaction, 6'9. The new Kistler KLX line is also very nice with some of the best guides currently available. If you want to spend some more cash you really can't beat a Dobyns Champion.
