White Braid?

I stopped at Dicks on my way home to window shop and found a 150 yard spool of 30# Sufix 832 for $14.97. Anyone familiar with Dick's sales knows this means the final price is $7.50. Since I am THAT broke, I set it aside for payday. I looked around a bit then looked back at the line only to find the reason for it's low price (I think): it's white. I have never seen white braid nor heard about anyone using it (negative reviews or otherwise). I was thinking I could just run a permanent marker along it to darken it or use a leader, but I am terrible at tying leaders on so far. My number 2 lake that I fish is very clear. Delavan, the main lake I fish, is moderately clear with heavy grass.

I did not know they had white 832. But I have used the the white Fireline Crystal and caught all sorts of fish from panfish, walleye, and bass. I can also tell you that all braid fades to a chalk color, and some guys use a sharpie to color it again.

The ink in the sharpie will not stick to the line, but it will come off and stick on your reel, your hands and you.

I've got white 10# 832 on my panfish rod.  Only had it out once so far with no fish caught.  Therefore I can't comment on whether or not it hurts my catch.  Area and time of year wasn't exactly the best for catching anything.

At that price its a great deal! if you dont like the White you CAN use a marker to change the color.

That was my thinking too: it's almost too cheap to pass up, white or not.

i dont think white will effect anything, heck they make red and yellow too an  people dont seem to have problems with those colors

Yes, but red is the most easily absorbed in the light spectrum.

Well, according to research that I should have done before posting about it here, the color is "ghost" and apparently is highly visible above water, but nearly invisible under. Reviews seem positive, but it IS Sufix so the quality remains.

Power Pro makes white braid. Spider Wire makes it as well.

I have some of the white Spiderwire. So far it's been lasting quiet well. I have 30 pound strung up in my fluke rod.

This was all the info I got on it.

Ya know, I didn't think about the very obvious conundrum of how a Hi-Vis line could be Hi-Vis on top of the water, then do the complete opposite underwater.

My only experience is with a co-worker who runs a successful bass tournament in Ark. We were leisure fishing and he had white braid and was throwing a frog around reeds and grass around an island. He didn't seem too worried about the visisble and he's no noob.

I fished with white braid and didn't notice any difference in catching fish.  Of course I used it on my spinnerbait rod and didn't use it for any jigs or trigs.  If I did I would've probably put a leader on it anyway.

Use a short fluoro leader. I use white Nanofil a lot with a short leader for smallmouth in clear water and have no problem catching fish.

Bass are not one of the more line shy fish, hi vis colors are for the angler not the fish.  If I were concerned about coloring the line, I simply would not buy it.  From my own point of view a deal is only a deal if I want or need it, just to buy something I'm not comfortable with because it's on sale, isn't a deal for me, an experiment is a different story, that means I want it.

I use the white a 832 line in 20# li have a leader on it now but I was fishing it straight and caught 3 steelhead/rainbow trout which are very line shy and in gin clear water. The only reason I run a leader now is for abrasion resistance in the rocks I tie a 8# flouro leader.

Fish Chris uses Tuff Line XP and it is White. He has caught giant fish of all species. He has caught 16lb plus largemouth, so I don't think it matters that much.

I use 20Lb white braided line on my three steelhead and salmon setups and have caught plenty of fish with it. I would use it for my bass setups too, if my local stores carried heavier pound test.

I use the Spider Wire Invisibraid and while it's very visible above the water once it's about 8 inches below the surface, it disappears.  However, I will say that I would not recommend using it in stained or dirty water because the line will stain, then it is visible in clear water.  Stick with clear water applications with this line or use a leader after you've used it in dirty water.

Wow. That is a great piece of info since I alternate between a very clear lake (near my dad's that we fish on weekends I go there) and somewhat dirty creeks I fish during the week. I would have NEVER thought that until it was too late.

 

This is why BR is a great resource. It has earned it's name 10x over.

I use stren sonic braid in white on my dropshot rod. I always tie a flouro leader anyway so I really don't care what color the braid is.  BUT i caught about 35 walleye last weekend on that setup WITHOUT a flouro leader. tied the white braid straight to the dropshot hook, and whacked 'em all day.  Walleye are more line shy than bas imo so if it can fool them, itll fool a bass.

I've been using spiderwire white invisibraid ultra cast with a flouro leader and its been great. I havent fished it without a leader yet so not sure about that. I guess im not familiar with Dicks sporting good sales, so why would the final price be $7.50?

I use hi-vis green on my spinning gear, love it. Fish don't care about the color either it seems.

Well, it turns out the Dick's "sale" (if it ends in .97 it's an extra 50% off) is no longer available. The cashier first acted like she had no idea what I was talking about, then said they only did it around the holidays. So that makes it not such an attractive deal.....
