Jig Meister Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Had my first fishing of the year today in north eastern Ohio. Had to go bank fishing as my life doesn't have time for busting out the kayak right now. Used the Siwtchblade jigs I made this winter, bluegill pattern with a living image bluegill blade #4. Fished an hour and got 3 between 1-2 pounds and 1 around the 3.5-4 pound mark. First time using these and I really love them over a typical spinner, worked really well, can't wait to hit up some deeper waters. Most defiantly try these out, easy to make and I think you will love them. I got one strike at the blade, but the rest of the hits were all inhaled and very noticeable. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted April 15, 2013 Super User Posted April 15, 2013 That's pretty neat. How did you go about attaching the blade? Quote
Jig Meister Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 It is a spinner bait swivel, I slipped over a small piece of latex tubing and put the hook through it, creates a tight seal to the hook and it will not slip off. Quote
Dyerbassman Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Nice idea! I may try it out. Something different is always good around here. Quote
CPBassFishing Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Love throwing these when fish are hesitant to hit a spinnerbait because they have a much smaller pIofile. They are also more weedless when used with the right jig. You can also play around with the blade size and get some crazy erratic action by ripping it like a lipless crank. There's not much this style lure can't do. Here's one I just made. Quote
DelfiBoyz_One_and_Only Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 How are you fishing it? Are you working it like a spinnerbait? Jay Quote
Jig Meister Posted April 16, 2013 Author Posted April 16, 2013 I fish it like I would a swim jig, or spinner. I vary the retrieve I was yo-yoing yesterday with some side ticks every now and then, pretty slow on the bottom of the water column. It just now started to get warm here and the bass where I fish have not started the spawn, and if they are it is way off the shallows from where I am used to seeing them. But they are hungry so the time is coming. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 17, 2013 Super User Posted April 17, 2013 Back in the day, mid to late 80's, Roland Martin endorsed a lure that looked much like your jig. I think Blue Fox made it. (I think that they were a subsidiary of Normark/Rapala lures at that time. As I recall he had some decent finishes that year and attributed it to a bait that looked much like yours. Not as detailed color wise of course, they didn't make lures as detailed color wise then. This was back when he was still very active in the tournament scene, but it had been several years since he had won. Also it was a few years before the helicopter lure, which totally destroyed his credibility in my book. I think that it is cool that you're re-created an old obscure lure and it is working for you. georgeyew Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Do they always stay vertical on the retrieve? Quote
Bass Junkie Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Great looking bait, glad to hear it's producing! There's something good about catching fish on something you made. Quote
