mtaag3 Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I have a BPS Carbonlite M casting rod 7' and was fishing today with a T rig and a 1/4oz weight. A fish grabbed the bait and I set the hook and WHAM the tip broke off about 4-5" from the end. Just a clean snap. It looked like someone cut it with scissors. Anyway, I took it back to BPS and they actually let me exchange it for a 7' MH rod, which I think will be more versatile for jig and t-rig fishing. Everything breaks, I was just a little surprised it broke for something as innnocuous as a hook set, only being less than a month old. Quote
Super User Teal Posted April 15, 2013 Super User Posted April 15, 2013 Im not surprised. I broke two JM rods and an RCX rod from BPS. Will not buy another. Mine were less than a month 1 Quote

Diggy Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I set the hook with elegance and seductive splendor, so Ill never break a rod on a hookset. I do bump the heck out of them on roofs and other objects. I yell every time. 3 Quote

Blues19 Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 I have had 5 bass pro rods and only one broke and it was my fault. Either way, they gladly exchanged it. I feel like they make very nice rods. I like Abu alot though with that 3 year warranty. Quote

Love it when they pull the fish out of the water on the hook set. I just shake my head and laugh. Quote

My wife always yells at me "don't u break that rod", knowing that I would have an excuse to go buy another.Don't worry bout the rod, the biggest majority of breaks happen in the first month or so. Any manufacturing defect will show up by then. There are very few breaks reported with the carbonlite and they have a good reputation. Just take it for what it was and enjoy the new rod. Quote
mtaag3 Posted April 29, 2013 Author Posted April 29, 2013 ***Update*** So I took my rod back to BPS and they exchanged in no problem. Where the problem lies is that the second rod started to develop a cracking sound. Being a little gun shy I took it back for a credit (and a different brand of rod) and I was telling the story to the customer service person behind the counter and he said that is the #1 brand of rod he sees returned. I'm not knocking the brand, just relaying my personal experience. Quote
JCiurej34 Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 I have a buddy who has done it numerous times with a Carbonlite too. He loves the rods though so he keeps on exchanging them every time it happens. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 30, 2013 Super User Posted April 30, 2013 Just the conversation or thought of breaking a rod creates bad karma. This entire thread should be deleted for everyone's well being. Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 gotta love BPS no questions asked return policy. 1 Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted May 1, 2013 Super User Posted May 1, 2013 I'd rather be fishing then rod swapping Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Any action that bends a rod tip beyond 90* to the butt puts the blank in jeopardy. There's need to do so because you loose mechanical advantage in those situations. If a high modulus blank gets knocked around and the shell is nicked, dented or otherwise compromised, the chance of failure increases as well. If the blank was defective I believe you'd see more of a splintering as opposed to a clean break. Quote
GeorgiaBassBros Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 im well known with the guys i fish with for ridiculous hooksets ever since i lost an estimated 10+ to and inadequate hookset. I dont take any chances anymore Quote
mjseverson24 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 here is the best way to prevent breaking any rod. dont use braid, use floro or mono. if you use braid watch the crazy hook sets. Mitch Quote
