I have heard countless times that its best to have a many rods set up with each different lures for different situation. but I have one rod, an old abu garcia cardinal spinning rod. Its my baby, and its feels like its an extention of my hand. and i dont like to use any other rod other than this one. Am I the only one like this?

Well, if I had to choose one rod for the rest of my life most probably it would be a GLoomis MBR783 IMX.

You are probably not the only one but definitely the minority.

Unfortunately the various techniques I fish require more rods.....no way I can chuck a frog on a finesse rod and vice versa.

That being said, yeah you are in the minority on this one

You are not alone.  I use one rod way more then any of my others.

I have a few rods that feel like an extension of my arm, lol!

If I had to choose one combo to fish for the rest of my entire life and for the majority of the fishing conditions it would be my Loomis GLX 844 with either my Chronarch D or new Metanium. It would even be good for inshore salt!

one of the reasons i have gotten so used to it is probably because I fish off shore. And I have had this rod for a long time. if I had a boat I would probobly use more rods.

Well, I have some rods that I favour, for one reason or another. But, because my rods are technique specific, it would not be ideal to use just one for multiple applications.

the only one I know

x2

I'm not sure how easy it would be for me to choose, I do have favorites that I tend to fish more with.  Depending on the day and situation.

Dx 703 with chronarch d7 and 12lb fluoro...just feels right

I was kind of thinking the same about the dx 703. The only other rod I would think would be close is the cumulus 6'10 mh I am pretty fond of. The fact that I don't go over a 1/2 oz very often and like to finesse fish in the spring and fall would make it tough for the 703.

I just don't think I would ever like a situation where I couldn't have at least 3 rods

The answer to the question you receive lies where you ask it.  On this forum very few people fish with but 1 rod, in the "world" of fishing I think the answer just might be different.

I fished most of last season with one setup, but have added to that as I felt limited in what I was doing. it has also been nice to not stop so often to change lures.

it can be done, but I look at it like philips screwdrivers. you can usually get by with 1 size, but it's not always ideal.

I could absolutely fish with just one rod. It would be a 7' M spinning or a 6'8" MXF spinning. I would catch a ton of fish, probably just as many as I do with lots of rods. But... I like rods. So I have a bunch.

However, I have discovered, that as recreational fishermen get older and more settled into a particular type of fishing, they tend to offload a lot of tackle and fish with just what they know works well day in and day out. I submit well-known outdoor writers Rich Zaleski and Ned Kehde for evidence. I suspect, in time, I'll get to that point and cut back to just a few sticks.

I had one rod, until I joined the forums. Talking with enthusiasts on a daily basis opens up one's curiosity to using/buying/trying other equipment. I have bought a few setups and will indeed buy more. I like trying different brands and collecting now.

I use different line choices for different situations, so many times I'll carry one rod and switch casting reels on it depending on where I'm fishing or for species. If I need one rod to get me by for all situations, Ill bring a reel with braid on a 6ft9 to 7ft MH casting and add leaders if need be. If I feel to use spinning tackle, I'll adjust it as well. Unfortunately I wont go snakehead fishing with fuoro or yozuri on my reel but I have no problem adding it onto the braid for bass if I need to.

Not me, if I had to I would but if I have a choice I want as many setups as I can comfortably fit on the boat.  My mind is constantly thinking what might be a better presentation for the location and conditions im fishing.  There will be times I get to a spot and rerig 3 or 4 different rods for what I think may get a bite in that particular situation.  If I had one rod I would be spending more time retying than fishing.

The MBR844C is a very versatile rod and an excellent start for everyone's collection!

Over the past year and a half since ive had it, its very hard for me to put down my veritas microguide.  7'MH and it is my work horse.  At the time of purchase i had only 1 other rod.  Over time, i've added 3 more combos, and none of them feel as good as that one.  All my rods have PQs on them.  i throw weightless plastics with the veritas, flukes, senkos, buzz frogs, and even a weightless space monkey here and there.  Love it!

Just one rod is tuff. 2 or three set-ups can cover almost everything. But the question was one rod that feels like an extension of your arm. Choosing only one rod would greatly restrict many of my bass fishing techniques. But if I HAD to choose one rod that fit me and my style the best it would be my St.Croix Avid 6' 3" MXF. However that would put an end to my planer board trolling for walleye and my downrigger fishing for Salmon. I guess it's kind of like asking a mechanic to just pick one tool to do everything with. I'd rather fish with only one set-up than not fish though.

There is only one true path to enlightenment, and it begins with Shimano Crucial 6'8" MH/F with a Chronarch attached to it :-D
