To cover the basis, with the least amount I would say 4. That's what I use. Actually I use 5. But 4 go on the boat.

I am also a fisherman for the sport. I do not do any tourneys. I'm sure if I fished tourneys I would have at least 8

Revo STX / Mojo Bass 7' MH/F / Power Pro 50lb Braid (Jigs, Pitching, Punching, Weighted Plastics)

Revo STX / Mojo Bass 7' M/F / P-Line Floroclear 12 lb (Weightless Plastics)

Revo S / Mojo Bass 7' MH/F / P-Line Floroclear 12 lb with a Speed Clip for changing lures on the fly. (Spinnerbaits, Crankbaits)

Revo S / Mojo Bass 6'8 MH/XF  P-Line Floroclear 12 lb with Speed Clip. (Top Water)

Revo S Spinning / Mojo Bass 7' M/F / P-Line Floroclear 10 lb with Speed Clip (Shore Fishing, Pond Fishing)

If money was no object, I would add 2 more

Currado E & 7' M Carrot Stix, 20 lb hi vis Power Pro & Fluoro leader - weightless plastics/stickbaits;  Currado E & 7' MH Veritas, 30 lb hi vis Power Pro & Flouro leader - T-rig worms & lighter jigs; Pro Qualifier & 7' MH Carrot Stix, 30 lb hi vis Power Pro - Jika rigs & football jigs; Quantum KVD & 7'6" heavy pitching Skeet Reese, 50 lb hi vis Power Pro - flipping & pitching weighted plastics; Orra & 7' MH Veritas, 30 lb moss green Power Pro - buzzbaits, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits; Lew's Speed Spool & 7' M Falcon Bucoo, 15 lb fluoro - lipless cranks, jerkbaits and other light cranks; Pro Qualifier & 7' MH Skeet Reese cranking rod, 17 lb mono - med & deep cranking;  BPS R Clunn & 6'9" M Veritas, 14 lb mono - light/med cranking.  Also, 3 spinning rigs - dropshot; shakeyheads/light topwater; and inline spinners, flukes, and other light lures for schooling bass.  These rigs get varying use depending on time of year.  Used almost exclusively at Lake of the Ozarks, where i keep my boat year around.  The rigs I use "back home" when not at LOZ are similar but considerably less investment (Vendetta rods and Black Max/Silver Max reels), fishing from a smaller "converted" semi V with 9.9 hp Yamaha (many of the lakes I fish near home have 10 hp limits).

Unless I have a pretty defined pattern or something is limiting the techniques that I can use then I'll normally start with 8 rods.

I know a guy who wins tournaments with only 1 setup, a $20 rod/reel combo, walmart special.

I have 5 in my co-angler toolbox.  Out of those 5 only 3 are "necessities".  The other two are to have other techniques tied for the day.

1 - 6'6" MH Baitcaster - 15lb FC - Jigs, Spinnerbaits, Chatterbaits and a lot more

2 - 7' MM Baitcaster - 10lb FC - Treble hook lures

3 - 6'6" MH Spinning - 10lb Braid - All softplastics, light t-rig, tube fishing etc.

4 - another spinning 7' MM for a complimentary finesse (usually drop shot.  Can also fish all the #3's in a pinch)

5 - 7'MH Baitcaster - 20lb FC - For those not so light moments.  (Frog etc.  Can also fish all the #1's in a pinch)

My fishing is pretty specialized, as I am a die-hard finesse fisherman, so of the 12 that I carry (I own more than 20), 9 are spinning rods (hence my handle). However, I could do all my fishing on 3 rods (and do quite frequently when fishing from a float tube).

2x 7' M spinning 10lb. braid, fluoro leader (grubs, shakey head, light t-rig, drop shot, grub, tube, senko, small topwater, small crank)

7' MH casting 12lb. fluoro (big worm, mag shakey head, big senko, mag drop shot, finesse jig)

I would be retying a lot at first, probably, but I could do it with those. To be honest, though I certainly have technuque specific rods in the boat (esp for the drop shot technique, which imho to do really well requires a specialized rod), the bulk of the 12-13 rods in my boat at a given time are fairly similar and are carried merely to avoid having to constantly re-tie. I like to be able to throw a drop shot, a shakey head, a grub, a scrounger, a little crank, and a finesse jig (insert whatever baits you're using) all at the same piece of structure on consecutive casts while I'm determining a pattern. Once I think I've got them figured out, all but 2-3 of the rods usually go back in the box.

2 Heavier  -  1 Crankbait  -  2 Lighter

That is generally speaking. It's all relative to the body of water one fishes, preferred presentations and baits as well as what gear one owns and prefers.

Personally speaking I rig the 2 heavier combos for jigs, heavy T-rigs or frogs.

The 2 lighter combos are for light T-rigs and weightless baits.

This is how I keep it simple. For me simple eqauls more time with a bait in the water as well as more focus on the fishing instead of what I should throw next.

Need 4 have 8. My main set ups are

1. Flippin rod

2. Frog rod

3. Soft plastic rod worms and small plastic swimbaits

4. A medium/moderate rod for anything with a treble hook.
