I don't know but I thought I could get away with one or two and in a short time I think I'm close to 10 including a few rods for the kids.

Need? ..............IMHO 2. A 6'6"-7' M power/fast action spinning rod, and a 7' MH/F casting rod. Want?........as many as I can fit in my boats rod locker without causing a tangled up mess. Have?........right now it's 12 in the boat, and I have two back up/loaner bass combos, a spare ultra light for guests, and my kids stuff at home, I could probably fit 2- 3 more in the boat before I exceed the tangled mess stipulation in the "want" category.

I only use 4:

2 for different soft plastic

1 for cranks and spinner baits

1 heavy (football) jigs

Well if you want to cover every technique from a-z, 4 rods will do. But obvisouly, the more rods you have, the easier it is cause you dont have to retie as much...

But the 4 rods i would say are:

1. 7' Medium, fast tip spinning rod to cover all your finesse techniques such as dropshot, shakey head, wacky worm, finesse worms, small finesse jigs, tubes,

2. 7'-7'6 MH Mod-fast tip for all your cranking and smaller topwater baits.

3. 7'-7'4 MH fast or xf tip. Good for all jigs, t rigs, c rigs, flukes, senkos, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits, small swimbaits topwaters, spoons, big tubes,

4. 7'11 heavy fast tip with heavy braid for punching mats and pads with a heavy weight. Also can be used for topwater frogs and alabama rigs.

Thanks for all the advice guys I have 6 and and only usually take 4 when I go out motodmast that makes alot of sense but for wat u mentioned for the #3 setup what line would I put on my reel I kno fluro sinks wouldn't that hinder the action of my top waters

Depending on what you like, you can run braid, 30lb is good. And tie your topwaters straight onto the braid. Then when you start fishing jigs or plastics, either keep the braid or tie on a fluoro leader with a quick alberto knot. Thats what i do and it works perfect..

3 will work but I like 4 even though I have rods meant for a single presentation. 6'6"-7' MH casting for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, jigs and worms, a 6'6" - 7' medium power, moderate action rod for shallow to mid depth cranks, a 7'4" - 7'11" for flipping, and a 6'6" - 7' medium power, fast action spinning rod for drop shot and shakey head along with other finesse techniques.  That is what you need but there are a lot ove variables and it depends on which techniques in each catagory you use. For example, the 6'6" -7' medium power for crank baits will be changed to a 7' - 7'9" MH-M if you are going to incorporate more medium to deep depth cranks, and if you don't flip or pitch you can eliminate that in favor of a jerkbait set up. I stick with the 6'6" and 7' rods for spinnerbaits and swim jigs and such but most of the time I'm target casting to spots with those lures so I'll use the 6'6" for them. I think 3 set ups would be fine as long as you tweak them to your style of fishing.

I use invisX fluro for all my set ups. yes it does sink. I just raise my rod tip up. However some prefer mono. I wont go to using leaders, too many knots/weak points.

Braid and tie on floro leaders when needed.

rcr I don't like using leaders either but this older guy told me he only uses mono I like the sensitivity of fluro tho I will give the invisiX a try

Here are my setups in the different situations.

Shore fishing -

1. Medium Heavy 6'6" to 7'-7'3 Baitcaster - All purpose

2. Medium 6'6" - lighter all purpose

Canoe

1. Medium Heavy 7'-7'3 - All purpose

2. Heavy 7'6" - Heavy Cover/Flip/Frog

3. Medium 7' - Lighter all purpose

4. Spinning Medium or Medium Light XF 6'6-6'10" for drop shot, shakey head.

Small boat Alone or Friends boat

1. Medium Heavy 7'-7'3 - All purpose

2. Heavy 7'6" - Heavy Cover/Flip/Frog

3. Medium 7' - Lighter all purpose

4. Medium/Moderate - for light cranks and medium

5. Medium Heavy 7'-7'6" Football Jigs and Plastics

6. Spinning Medium or Medium Light XF 6'6-6'10" for drop shot, shakey head.

That is what I usually will carry on the different situations.  I do own more combos than that (19), that is not including my cheaper rods/salt water and older ones that my family would use or friends.  I am also preparing for the next year or two as I continue to research which Bass Boat I want to invest in.  Hence the amount of combos, other than I just have to have them.  lol  For now I'll rotate them and give them all a good work out this season.

I currently carry 25 different rigs.  I generally fish by myself.  Last time I went, half of them were strapped down on the back deck, in the "back up" or "probably won't use this time" categories, but I had them in the boat should I need or want them.  How they are organized depends on how I want to fish on that particular day, what I want to focus on.

When I have someone else in the boat with me, I cut down on the number of rigs, just to reduce clutter.
What I really need is a bigger boat with better organized rod lockers, but that isn't going to happen in the near future.

Back to the original question, "How many do I NEED?"   The obvious answer is that I need all of them, I am probably going to need some more before this season is completed.  There is a difference between needing a new rig and upgrading a rig already in service.   I have upgraded rigs a few times already this season.

Have over 20 outfits in the rotation. Probably could get by with 4 or less when a pattern or two has been established.

How many do you need? Who knows.

How many can i get away with? Probably 3 or 4.

I i carry about 15 my boat. Do i use them all? No. Absolutely not.

Depending on time of year, i limit what i carry. Durring the winter this year i went out with Six rods most of the time.

But you can certainly get buy with just two or three rods.

If i had to limit it to three. 7'MH f c, 7M f c, 7ML f spinning

If it were 4 i would add a flipping stick, if 5 i would add a MH Crankin rod.

But im fortunate enough and blessed enough that im able to have much more...so i do that, its what i like...gives me confidence.. but thats just me.

Lol it gets the best of us! Im perfectly fine with the 9 rod combos i have right now, but i always find myself saying, i could really use another 7'MH for that one rig... lets just put it this way, probably 70% of my money goes towards fishing..lol

For enthusiasts, technique specific gear is fun
to collect. However, three rigs cover all the
basics:

#1 6 1/2' or 7' MH baitcaster for jigs, some
soft plastics and spinnerbaits

#2 6 1/2' or 7' MM baitcaster for treble hook
lures

#3 7' MF spinning rod for lighter lures and a
variety of techniques

I have recently pared down to two rods on my kayak. I have taken as many as 5, and will take 3 or 4 on rare occasions now.

I don't fish "A-Z" in techniques, just a few at a time. Sometimes I wish I had X lure or such with me, but those times are fewer.

SHHH I don't need to hear this right now lol. The bait monkey has gotten enough of my money this loooong winter... We're in the middle of a blizzard right now and 3 feet of ice on the lakes still... Maybe a new rod would cheer me up  :eyebrows:

I take 6 usually

2 jig/trig rods

1 med/fast spinning rod

1 vibe jig/ spinnerbait rod

1 arig/ Swimbait rod

The last one is either an all around rod or my drop shot rod
