I need a new cranking rod and am looking to spend around 200 ish. I had been set on the GL2 MH cranking but keep hearing good things about these Avids.

Can someone school me on these? I don't think my local BP has these in stock to try. I'm after the 7' MH. It will be used for mainly Series 4 SQ bills, 4 medium divers and 5 XD's.

With the TW sale I can get this around 175 shipped 2nd day air or 170 ground.

Thanks.

Can't help with that rod, but for square bills and medium depth crankbaits the AVC70MM is THE BOMB!

Fyi gander mountain has a really good rebate going on for st croix rods thst will get you it cheaper than tw right now.

The 7'mh avid would be perfect for what you need.

Don't have an Avid in a cranking blank, but a Mojo (7'MH/M) and a Legend Tournament (7'10" H/M). So far all I have used the 7' MH/M for is ripping lipless cranks out of grass, and plan on using it with the same baits you are talking about. I have other Avids, so I am quite confident in saying that the Avid crankbait rod will be fantastic.

I have the 7' MM & the 7' HM. The medium handles the light stuff & I use the heavy to handle everything else including deep divers. The MM is rated for 1/4 to 5/8. The MH is rated 3/8 to 1oz. The HM is rated 1/2 to 1 & 3/8. You can probably exceed all those rating a little if you need to. The croixs always have a little extra beef to their ratings. Good luck with the new rod.

Jeff,

How light it is compared to say the GL2's? I think my two I have are around 7-8 ounces

Is the medium heavy going to be too much rod then? I know on the Loomis mediums it feels like a crappie rod

I would suggest the mhm.  I do not know the exact weight but it is light.  My last cranking stick was a glass rod, and it was much heavier than this rod.

*Edit*  just looked it up avc70mhm is 4.1 ounces

Yikes! I don't have the exact weight on the GL2 but 4.1 ounces is super light. I know just from memory that's lighter than the GL2.

Thanks looks like I'm gonna pull the trigger on it. I think with the Gander Rebate it may save me 15 dollars.

avc70mhm---That's what I have so far. It's a little bit more "moderate" of a moderate action I am used to. So far it has worked pretty well for me. I have thrown a lot of small baits and it casts them pretty well. My only advice would be that when setting the hook and playing the fish out, you can and really should get into the fish. Put a lot of pressure on them because that's what the rod is made for. Keep a really tight line at all times and you won't loose any fish.

I lost my very first fish on it. I corrected, and haven't lost one since.

I've got both of them and I'd suggest the mhm. I like the mm, but most feel like it's very whippy, which is actually what I like about it because it's more forgiving. They're also light rods, which is nice if you have to throw a crank all day.

I have the Mojo MHM, Avid MHM, and Legend Extreme MHM. Every model can hold their own through the wide spectrum crankbaits. From wakes to squarebills to 20ft depths it can handle the versatility

That really sounds like my ticket then. I plan on using 30 pound brand so the more moderate the better for me. THanks

Unless you have your heart set on a MHM, St Croix has a 7'2" MM Legend Xtreme cranking rod in their bargain room for half price.  $185 plus shipping of about $15.  You can't beat that deal with a stick!

I appreciate it. I think I want to stick with a MH for now.

RW,

Have you thrown the DT4's and Bomber Square A's on this rod?

I love my MH I got. I still can't quit gooing over it, but I have noticed that the small DT's4, Square A's and 1.5's seem a bit to small for it. It loads ok, but I think the Medium may load them better. I have another GC to blow and thought about it.
