Texas bassman Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I HAD THE BIGGEST NASTIEST BACKLASH EVER TODAY. I HAD MY REEL SPOOLED UP WITH BPS XPS FLUOROCARBON 12LB TEST. ITS MY SHALLOW TO MEDIUM CRANKING REEL. DIDNT WANT TO GO GET A NEW SPOOL OF XPS AT BASS PRO SO I WENT TO MY LOCAL WALMART. I WAS GONNA GET VICIOUS FISHING 100% FLUOROCARBON IN 12LB TEST BUT THEY DIDNT HAVE IT. THEY USUALLY DO BUT OH WELL. MY ONLY OPTION WAS THE BERKLEY VANISH. I GOT IT IN 14LB TEST JUST TO BE SAFE. I DONT WANT MY LURES SNAPPING OFF WHEN I CAST. WHAT DO YALL THINK OF THIS LINE??? Quote
Dyerbassman Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I personally have not had luck with it. Tried it in 10 lb. and 12 lb. test and didn't like it. It coiled up a lot on me on my spinning reels and had bad memory. Maybe I got a bad batch? Not sure, but haven't bought it again. Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I use the heavier stuff (20-40#) for leader material in saltwater without any problems. Quote
wnybassman Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 Vanish is the only FC I have used over the past 10+ years. With that said, most people absolutely hate it. I have just been lucky and never got a bad spool I guess. Quote
grampa1114 Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I've been using 4#Vanish on my buggy whips for the last 2-3 years with decent results, also use 20# for flipping and heavy spinnerbait leaders...pike don't bite thru it and my ultralites work just fine...at 4'6" they don't cast very far anyway though. For my needs...it's just fine. Grampa Quote
Texas bassman Posted April 14, 2013 Author Posted April 14, 2013 thanks guys. i just dont want to lose a lure or fish. next spool im going to try seaguar. seems like alot of people like that stuff. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted April 14, 2013 Super User Posted April 14, 2013 Vanish is the only FC I have used over the past 10+ years. With that said, most people absolutely hate it. I have just been lucky and never got a bad spool I guess. Same here. Lots of folks hate it, but I've never had a problem with this line in over 10 years myself. Quote
fstr385 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I use it on some of my baitcasters. yea, it has some memory, but I don't backlash it often, and its fairly strong. Not the best, but def decent for the dollar. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted April 14, 2013 Super User Posted April 14, 2013 I haven't used it in a few years and then it was sold as a "walleye" line "good on spinning tackle" -which I took to mean a softer FC. This was bolstered by Berkley then coming out with their 100% FC which was designated a "bass line" -as a more abrasion resistant FC. I did find Vanish lower in abrasion resistance in lighter lb tests so I switched to 100%. However, the best way to add abrasion resistance is to inc diameter. You did the right thing there, buying the 14lb, I think. What's interesting is these lines differ in diameter for each lb test rating. The 100% is thicker per lb test than is Vanish (the 6lb is an 8lb diam and the 8 is a 10lb diam). There may be a chunk of your abrasion resistance right there. BPS is similar to Vanish in diameter and I've liked it. Since many lines undergo the "rating game" I choose lines for given applications based on diameter, rather than rated lb test. At least it gives me a standard to work with. Hope this helps. Quote
The Rooster Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I've used 12 and 14 pound Vanish in the regular, and the transitions line, both. No problems with any of them on baitcasting reels, and I'd use them again. Only reason I'm not now is because my local tackle shop didn't have it last year, and I didn't want to go to Walmart for it so I bought Sensations copoly line instead, and liked it just as well so I got it again this year. My dad uses the Vanish in 4 and 6 pound lines on some of his rods. I saw him snag a lure once on the 4 pound line. He wasn't even able to break it on purpose when he chose to pull until it snapped. He ended up having to cut it. That stuff ain't breaking unless you fray it or tie a poor not, or a knot not recommended for fluorocarbon line. I use the speed knot, which is a variation of the Eugene knot. Both work for fluoro line. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted April 14, 2013 Super User Posted April 14, 2013 I've been using it now for about 3 months in 20 pound as a leader on 40 pound braid. It seems to be working very well. No major fraying and only break off was my fault for not checking the line. I run about 7 foot and use it all day. I usually end up cutting it off when it get home. I bought it on sale for 10 bucks. I kinda wished I'd gotten two more spos of 20 and 14 now. My go to fluoro is BP XPS. I don't think I will be changing over to Vanish, anytime soon, but in a pinch I wouldn't feel bad using it as my main leader. I'm not sold as a main line yet. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted April 14, 2013 Super User Posted April 14, 2013 The first FC I started with. Quickly moved to others. Seaguar Invizx is my favorite now. If you need a cheaper FC try their red label. Quote
Super User Teal Posted April 14, 2013 Super User Posted April 14, 2013 I can get by with Vanish. But not my preference for a mainline. Its not horrible if you soak it down with KVD LL, but its still no where close to an untreated spool with Sniper FC. I have a spool left of vansh that im trying to use up as leader line. I will say that it is a strong line and i havent had any knot breakages. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 14, 2013 Super User Posted April 14, 2013 I never had any problems with Vanish in 8,10,12 lb test sizes, but those lines were used mostly on drop shot, crankbaits,.... basicly finesse stuff or open hooks where I never came out of my shoes setting the hook OR as leaders where there was no kinking them during a bad backlash or something. I was always breaking 14, and 17lb Vanish, both as mainline and as leaders. Once I switched to Trilene 100% the breakage in the higher lb tests stopped, but I didn't care for the thicker diameter, and poor handling of that line. I have since switched to Seaguar Red Label, it's inexpensive, has smaller diameter than Trilene 100% in the same sizes, and have not had any issues what so ever with it. Quote
robdob Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 ten years ago a good chunk of the pro's who fish for a living were using vanish on their spinning reels before there were lots of high dollar japanese flouro's that handle much like mono. It's not the best line out there but its plenty good enough. I would say seaguar red label is the best cheap flouro there is but vanish is not too bad. Much better than the stren flourocarbon and about the same as the xps flouro, it may actually be the exact same thing as xps flouro because neither company actually makes the flourocarbon themselves they sub-contract out to one of the Five flourocarbon extruders that are in operation so many of the lower dollar flouro's people like to compare are actually identical in every way except packaging. From what I understand(it was in the most recent ABA magazine and i've been told by others) Seaguar is the only line company that manufactures their own flourocarbon line in house. Most of the people you hear bashing vanish are folks who normally use monofilament and they don't understand flourocarbon is a totally different ballgame and they think because it isn't limp like their mono that its no good. 2 Quote
Texas bassman Posted April 14, 2013 Author Posted April 14, 2013 thanks man. ima try the seaguar invizx. in a couple of months after i put some wear on my current spools. its still in the 40s60s here in northern Illinois. had some sleet come down today Quote
Blues19 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Ive never used it, but thats the only Flouro that my uncle uses. I mentioned that i had heard that it wasnt great, but he said he never had issues. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted April 14, 2013 Super User Posted April 14, 2013 My least favoroite fluoro. Hope you have decent luck. Quote
The Next KVD Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 RUN AWAY NOW!!!!!! Get as far away from that stuff as you possibly can. I don't see a reason as to why Berkley is still even marketing and selling the stuff. When it first came out and was really the only fluorocarbon that was widely available it was good, but now compared to everything else, it is on the bottom of the barrel. Scratch that, its not even in the barrel. They should have a trash bin to put Vanish just as it gets done being put on the spool at the factory. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 14, 2013 Super User Posted April 14, 2013 absolute and total garbage . 1 Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Never used it before, so I don't know (usually use red label Seaguar.) I've heard many times though that it's called Vanish because the fish just seem to Vanish once they're hooked I assume folks are talking about breakage or knot strength. I'd try it if it were me. Maybe test the breakage and knot with a scale if you have one handy, so you can set your drag accordingly. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 14, 2013 Global Moderator Posted April 14, 2013 absolute and total garbage . X1000 One of the worst fishing lines I've ever used for bass. Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Boy I don't know want I am doing wrong for this line to work so good. In saltwater. I use it for redfish, snook and tarpon with no problems what so ever. I highly recommend it. Quote
prjavelin Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 seaguar is amazing. I will never change those lines. Invisx and red label are both very good. I havent had the pleasure or trying tatsu. I got a spool of vanish and it was horrific. Ive never had trouble with seaguar. 1 Quote
